hello - great progress people - have just popped in to update my signature (woowoo). Not been online much recently due to one thing and another. I hav removed my deadline of wanting to be DF by this time next year as it feels like too much pressure. I wanted to be under 10k by christmas this year and that's disappointing too. Life has been getting in the way of my plans a bit recently (car, vets, and assorted other things) and while I am still making progress it's not as fast as i'd like and that has brought back some of the old anxiousness and associated behaviour of wanting to shove my head back in the sand. Unhelpful thoughts like 'oh well i'm not going to make it by my deadline so screw the whole thing' and have fallen off the ynab wagon. So am getting myself together and having a word with myself. I have removed the deadline, given myself a little flex in my budget and am still making progress. Just goes to show you can't ever take your eye off the prize. Oh and hellifax have promised me a default for the new year on one account (a relatively small balance) but still won't accept I am experiencing hardship on my massive cc account with them so haven't stopped or reduced interest. ....

Karen, did you ever refer hellifax to the FOS? If not, please write Hellifax an official complaint and then refer it, or if you have already complained and got nowhere, give the FOS a call.

Hiya TTFM - yep I complained when I first went self managed and they ignored me so referred to FOS which resulted in some charges being returned to me on my cc account and a good will payment of something very small but nothing more as they do not accept I am in financial hardship. I think now they are defaulting one account I will have a go again.... *bangs head on desk at prospect of more entanglings with hellifax....*

You know you can take it back to the FOS if you need to?

Though if you are self managed, it's so much easier to play hardball with them. Try dropping your payments on both hellifax accounts to £1 per month for 3 months and write and let them know that you are in financial difficulty and it may remain as a token payment indefinitely. Worked wonders for me with Lloyds TSB and I saved enough to pay off a different debt completely ;)

Hi Karen777 I would say clearing nearly 15k is pretty awesome and you should congratulate yourself on that. esp if hellifx are still applying interest!

I started my DMP in Nov 2012 am only hitting 10k cleared now and after long struggles with Hellifx they finally defaulted me in June which at last meant no more interest... sadly BC decided they would introduce interest otherwise i would be further ahead. But if you check Noddle you might see the signs of the default coming from hfx mine started to show missed payments for about 4 months before finally showed as default in June.

celebrate your successes your doing great:beer:

thank you people :) I hadn't thought of just playing that sort of hardball with them. Or going back to the FOS. I think part of me still sometimes feels grateful that I haven't been thrown into debtors prison so I feel sort of cheeky! They based their explanation of me not being in financial hardship on my spending patterns over several years which makes no sense anyway as has no bearing on my levels of debt or current financial situation..... hmm. Time to reconsider... *rolls sleeves up, attempts scary facial expression, fails, scares cat none the less and then realises arms are cold without sleeves pulled down*

I needed a smile and that description really made me laugh Karen :rotfl:

Don't feel cheeky, think of all the interest they have had from you over the years. You are paying back what you owe now but fight tooth and nail to not pay a penny more interest!

  • Can you get approval to be an employed IFA if you are on a debt management plan? The handbook refers to CCJ's, bankrupticies and
IVA's but does not specifically mention debt management plans or defaults. Has anybody got any experience of this?

Ooh I know that feeling - and I also know I need to get tough with them too - what really makes me mad is if I had the money they'd probably offer me 0% for a while

Roll those sleeves up, you know you can do it

  • Hi all,

Having not been to the forum for a few months it's lovely to see familiar dmp'ers and new faces too!

We are now 5 months into our Dmp after having a lightbulb moment in May and we have had no trouble from our creditors, all accepted the DMP and froze interest (Barclay card are still charging 3%) and we have defaults from all but barclaycard which is great!

The first Christmas without credit cards has been a big bump into reality, it's been stressful and at times a little depressing but we are nearly there and now we are thinking that although we haven't bought Christmas presents for each other this year we won't be dreading that credit card bill in January like many others! We are both due pay rises in January and in the summer our son will finish nursery so no more nursery bills will help us massively and we might actually get ourselves an emergency fund saved away!

Should I be asking barclaycard for a default at this point or is it way too early in the Dmp?
