asking for a streetlight to be dimmed

There is a streetlight that shines very brightly on our house and through the curtains, causing my sleep to be not as good as it could be. It's been bugging me for years.
Most residential roads have the space for three cars width (a car parked on each side of the road, and space for one to drive through in the middle). The road this streetlight is on, is smaller, and only has room for two cars (one car parked and one to drive through), yet the light it shines is the same, so the house i live in gets extra light compared to homes on normal sized streets next to this street.
My question is - how would i go about doing this ? Do i contact the council, local councillors ? who...
and if anyone has any experience in asking this, please feel free to share
thankyou

I doubt they'll dim a streetlight. In the olden days, you did see some streetlights with a shade on one side to deflect light from windows, but I confess I haven't noticed one for years.
I assume from the "years" comment it's always been like this... and you bought the house with it there? You will benefit from a lower crime rate if your immediate area is well lit!
The easiest remedy is for you to install blackout curtains, or a blackout blind in addition to the curtain you have. I have one in my home office (I work very odd hours at times, and need dark/light control) and it is extremely effective - difficult even in direct sun to tell day from night.0 -
Sorting out your own blinds will be much easier.
If they (through some miracle) agreed to dim the light, it will take forever for them to actually do it, and it will probably be insufficiently done.0 -
If it were me I'd have changed the curtains and/or fitted a blackout blind by now.....
From £8 http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/blinds/blackout-blinds/
They can't dim a light ... and even if they thought about it it'd require a meeting where it was discussed, a surveyor to attend, a meeting to discuss it, a decision to be reached ... and a team of staff and a cherry picker to get up there.... total cost probably £2,000.0 -
thankyou but the room is very small and i experimented with blackout blinds. the material smelt so strong i removed them, as the whole room began to smell
i don't mind some lighting, just not as strong as this. i don't know if these are dimmable or not
also , surely it would save the council some electricity and reduce on some old night pollution
interesting to hear they had those light deflectors on0 -

Can I recommend the blackout curtains/ liners from Dunelm Mill? Quite cheap, you can fit them onto existing curtains if needed, and they work really well. We have them in our bedroom and having closed them last night at 8pm so still light, it was like night0

Try an eye mask; I find I sleep so much better wearing one even though I feel a bit of a wally."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

New street lights around my area and some have had shields fitted to prevent light shinning into house windows. Contact your local council.0
