There is NO tax that is specific for road building and maintenance. All taxes go into a general pot
I guess if you give a lift to a mate and they give you a tenner for the ride. Since that exact tenner didn't go to pay for fuel at the service station and was ambiguously inserted into your wallet that tenner did not technically cover fuel costs and was a general "gift"?
because that is the arguement you are proposing.
Of course vehicle tax goes to pay for motoring expenses, to cover dvla, accident investigations, emergency services, road signs, roads etc. etc. etc.
The treasury will look at the total road related costs and seek to tax motorists to generate revenue to cover these costs plus a surplus to cover the huge national debt0 -
I love it, and use it a heck of a lot. My tag means I always win the booth grand prix as I get to do a rolling starts.
Anyone who thinks there are no Police on there isn't using it much... its the worst place to speed, the police love it as its so quiet its much safer to pull people and speeders stick out a mile. They work it a lot, plus there are no shortage of victims as people either think they don't bother there or its outside the normal laws like a private road.
In fact its the ONLY road I set the cruise to 75 and stick to it due to the huge frequency they operate unmarked cars on it.
What is beyond my comprehension is how you can travel mid morning and its totally deserted, yet there is still always some bloke in an Audi sat in the middle lane????
Expensive? not if someone else pays the bill.0 -

If it had a higher limit (which it could, since it's always empty) then I'd definitely find it worth the money. The only time I used it we were passed by everything as if we weren't moving whilst doing an indicated 75.0 -

Never seen a police car on there yet.. Maybe lucky... very lucky....
There are unmarked cars on the toll. There's certainly a silver/grey Jaguar XJ, An Audi and a Ford Focus ST but without the bling and have seen plenty of cars stopped.
The thing that annoys me about the toll road (apart from the crazy pricing) is the d!ckheads who travel along at 80mph in the fast lane when the entire motorway is empty. Just proves these morons drive in the right hand land regardless, probably hurt their ego if seen doing 85mph in the inner lane.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
I don't use it much - probably been up the M6 about 100 times in total, so prepared to stand corrected...but....
When approaching the toll exit the gantries often say "M6 toll clear". I take this to mean "Toll clear and the normal M6 is OK too".
If it says "M6/A38 B'ham exit congestion or M6/M5 congestion" then I will take the toll, especially if tomtom live traffic agrees.
It's quite fun that you can cruise at 75-80 and never get out the inside lane..0 -

Talking of which - why dont they jsut add two more lanes instead of one so they cover their backs for another 100 years.
I think its probably impossible, elevated section would cost unbelievable amounts of cash and would IMO not make a great deal of difference,
If drivers could manage to read the signs above the lanes, and understand from them which lanes are open, and act on that understanding, it would all run much better.
Often find meself cruising down an almost deserted but open inside lane, gently undertaking 3 lanes of jammed traffic.
Other times, one sees several cars and vans driving up the re-established hard shoulder, passing signs saying hard shoulder for emergency use only and crossing several red crosses brightly lit up above them.
Any variation of the above two themes.0 -

If the roads are all clear why does it matter what lane they're in?
Doing a trip from london to manchester, you'll inevitably just do stuff on autopilot. IF you been doing 80-90 on the overtaking lane for hours on end and then suddenly there is a lull in traffic it's going to slip your mind.0 -

We pay taxes and vat on that tax on fuel, plus road fund licence (now VED) for the building and maintenance of our roads, i wonder if MP's pay the Toll out of their own pockets or do they put it on expenses, kerching.0 -
When you get past Corley Services on the M6 check the signs to see how long they say it will take to junction 8. If it is less than 30 minutes (when clear it is about 15) don't bother with the toll road. Also the toll road meets M6 again just oast junction 11 and you need 10a for M54 to North wales, so extra miles that way too.0
