As it is at the moment, I feel you are just finding ways to trip up, rather than discuss. We then end up in this whole "you said" with the reply "no, I said".... rather than a debate.

Not at all. It's a matter of perspective - if there was a shortage of potatoes most would suggest we grow more. Some may point out that a small number of people were reacting to the shortage by making mashed potato, freezing it and trying to make a profit later. They may start showing signs of obsession with mashed potato to the detriment of seeing the bigger picture.

Growing more potatoes would a) deal with the root :) cause and b) deter the horrid mashed potato hoarders.

I fully understand this argument, but who's going to build them and then sell them for anything less than the absolute maximum achievable?

If you can't realise your maximum profit then you will just restrict the supply and build slightly less until you do.

It's like trying for force Ferrari to build more cars so we can all afford a cheap one. They will just say 'nope', end of story.

indeed so if there was one monopoly builder or an effective cartel, otherwise a single builder restricting supply simply means they make less profit.

You could have just solved world hunger just there Wotsthat.

Why go hungry? Just grow more rice.

Someone should sort you out a nobel prize.

You obviously don't know housebuilders very well.

You're showing your lack of analytical skills.

Why assume that the problems associated with world hunger and the UK housing market have a) the same root cause(s) and b) the same solutions?

Looking at the root cause(s) of problems is the best way to determine effective corrective actions whether that be a shortage of UK housing or world hunger.

Growing more rice may not resolve world hunger but building more houses in the UK will resolve a housing shortage. Difficult to understand?

if you have specific information about illegal cartels in the building industry then please do share this with us.

    who is involved?
    how does it work?

Does depend where you build the houses though. There are Northern Towns with loads of empty houses.

So just building houses will not solve the problem. There is more to it.
