Fair enough. Running on the timing belt is it?

Problem is now, they are not willing to take it to bits again to fix it, basically said £200 please for doing it. Wont give me car until I pay.

  • Pay with a credit card under protest and then you can use the credit card company to put pressure on the garage to sort it out (or they refund you eventually).

    What he said. ^^^^^^

Id also argue that by accepting the job as they did, they were implying a level of competency.

DONT have them do any more work to the car. get it left as-is. That way if it comes down to an issue of competency (or lack thereof ) on their behalf, you have the vehicle in its present state, ready to be inspected.

Get another garage to repair it and ask them for a report on what they found, while you're at it.

If you've already got a replacement for now then you could leave it with them (for now) and start a court claim for return of the car plus the cost of repair (by someone competent) of the damage they've caused.

If the facts are as you've outlined (not that I doubt you, but it has to be said) then it should be a pretty straightforward claim, and theres a fair chance you'll get the car back @ no charge as soon as the paperwork lands on their mat.

Car was absolutely fine before it went it, started quick and no knocking , no white smoke and no lazy start.

You took a working vehicle into a garage and told them to fit a used fuel pump that you supplied?

Why did you want the pump changed if there were no issues?

Point is I didn't think fuel pumps run on any kind of belt, whether timing or auxiliary belt. So confused why timing is out because of the fuel pump. Happy to learn something new though.................

If they have caused it though and you don't need the car back as a matter of urgency then write a letter of complaint telling them you expect the work to be undertaken with reasonable care and skill, what you require of them and by when. Or give them the option to return the car so you can have it independently inspected.
If they don't respond and refuse to release the car send another letter, a letter before action, for the value of the car. It's more than likely a judge will order the return of the car and postpone judgement pending an independent report and assessment of damages.

You have got the point that the OP is talking about the injection pump by now?

Anyway OP, go down to the garage with a witness and a cool head and remind them they have fitted and refitted a pump incorrectly twice now. Your quite happy to pay the agreed price, but only for a properly running, timed-up correctly vehicle. A couple of days grace and then Trading Standards/The Judge/MP or whatever, but don't go pitching for a fight or bits get lost and lawyers get expensive.
