We got engaged so long ago and then I think people gave presents more . Things like wine glasses , tea towels , bits and pieces to keep for when you got a home together . Now lots of couples live together and have the basics . Wine is a popular engagement gift these days but there's not many people who'd be displeased with an engagement present .0

I do exactly this. Doesn't have to be anything expensive. In fact, I prefer doing this to trying to find something to order for an occasion. That's when the John Lewis vouchers come into play!;)
I have a DD who hates 'stuff' so I buy her loads of flowers for no special reason because she loves them and any little gift I can when I see it. beyond that it's always money unless I can twist her arm to write a list. She had a pair of wellies for her last birthday!0
