We got engaged so long ago and then I think people gave presents more . Things like wine glasses , tea towels , bits and pieces to keep for when you got a home together . Now lots of couples live together and have the basics . Wine is a popular engagement gift these days but there's not many people who'd be displeased with an engagement present .

Only give a gift for a party ... but as it's close family then a gift is also fine/acceptable without a party.

    Really??

I've been known to buy people little gifts for absolutely no reason at all, other than I like them and thought of them when I saw it.

No-one needs a reason/excuse to give a gift if that's what they like to do.

Giving a gift on engagement is very sweet and thoughtful. I hope they appreciate you, OP!

I do exactly this. Doesn't have to be anything expensive. In fact, I prefer doing this to trying to find something to order for an occasion. That's when the John Lewis vouchers come into play!;)

I have a DD who hates 'stuff' so I buy her loads of flowers for no special reason because she loves them and any little gift I can when I see it. beyond that it's always money unless I can twist her arm to write a list. She had a pair of wellies for her last birthday!
