Sounds like your Windows is updating automatically so that should be fine. You can check in the Control panel, Systems and Security, Windows updates - Check for updates. How do you update Windows?
I have updated IE on my desktop, run the scanner that I get with my BT infinity and everything was well. I backed up the computer using an external backup drive.
I then went to Windows. It is Windows 7, service pack 1, Home Premium.
I clicked a link to update it, and it took me to a page to buy Windows Professional. I don't want to buy this.
Is there a way I can just make sure Windows has all the latest patches etc? I suspect it is up-to-date as it is always downloading things and updating them when I turn it off.
I also have a Macbook Air, but have done nothing to that as I think Gameover Zeus only affect MS.
What is AV and how do I check it has the latest definitions?
AV is your Anti-Virus and it should update itself automatically. Do you know what AV you are using?Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I am a member of a Lincolnshire Police website which informed us about this problem last week. The warning actually comes, as has been said, from the National Crime Agency. NCA works with an international team, headed by the FBI and NSA, which is attempting to find and take out as many online criminals and associated threats as possible.
So it is a real threat and needs to be watched for, but if you have a good Internet Security programme, backed by Malwarebytes*, take great care accessing websites, don't open any emails you cannot be certain are genuine, and look carefully at any downloads for check boxes with additional stuff they want you to take, you should be OK. Most of it is commonsense.
* Malwarebytes Pro (paid for) is worth every penny: it is active all the time your PC is on.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I am running what I think is an outdated version of Avira free - the reason being that every time I try to download the latest version the process stops halfway through and informs me that I MUST uninstall any other anti-malware or antivirus programmes, claiming they are 'incompatible'.
Now, I find Superantispyware and Malwarebytes pretty useful, actually, and I refuse to accommodate this blatant bit of anti-competitive crap.
Does anyone know if it's still going on or whether there's a way round it?
It's not them being anti-competitive, Its due to the way some virus work. The anti-virus sometimes blocks a virus by occupying space where a virus would be. And if you use various anti-virus they all try to occupy that space and they see each other as an infection to block.
You shouldn't have multiple anti-virus as they will work against each other.0 -
I have McAfee security centre installed. Should that be enough or should I download any of the other "fixs" listed the Get safe online site? Personally any issues I have had in the past is usually caused by virus software! So don't want to run anything else if not needed!
cheers

Thanks, I have checked Windows, and I must have set it up to update automatically.
Anti-virus, of course! AV used to mean audio-visual, but that's probably out-of-date now. I have BT Infinity, so get McAffee with this. Again, it is always updating itself, so I'm probably covered. When I ran the full scan it said everything was OK.
Thanks for the info, RumRat.0 -
Hi,
As you can probably tell from this enquiry, I have little real understanding of internet security.
Our laptops have security programs on them but I don't think that there is any security on my son's ipod, x-box or mobile phone. All of these devices are used to access the internet and so presumably they all need to be protected.
Please can anyone tell me if this is the case and if so how I can install the necessary security on these devices.
Many thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help. kje.0
