Perhaps the poster is a bank robbery get away driver? Hope he won't be taking the little one on any capers!

Wouldn't be my choice, but I'm surprised no-one's suggested an Impreza. Loads of them around for less than 4K and in the right spec to achieve the sub-7 60.

Good shout... as long as he also doesn't mind sub-20 mpg even when driving like Miss Daisy!

Focus ST's are available from the 5k mark if you can stretch a bit further.

But if you have to stick to 4k max:

    Vauxhall Vectra 2.8 T V6 Elite
Vauxhall Zafira GSI or Meriva VXR with a mild tune will do under 7 secs to 60.

Would probably go for a Subaru Legacy SpecB.

All the handling of a WRX with more comfort and less likely to attract the wrong kind of attention and cheaper to insure.

Well, just incase anybody wondered, I ended up with a 2007 Mazda 3 MPS Aero. Quite an amazing car. Ferocious is the word I first thought when I drove it.

Lovely car though, can cruise along in 6th gear getting 40-60 mpg quite easily to make up for the quicker moments. So, very easy and calm to drive when you want it (when the LO is in the car).

Thanks for all your suggestions, it made me look at cars I would never have thought of.

60mpg.. is that going downhill in gear where the fuel is shut off? :)

Official figures are under 30mpg.. Didnt Mazda quote mid 30's ?
