Thanks for all your suggestions. The Mazdas are definitely worth looking into as I've always been a Jap perfomance car lover. Swedish bunch is worth looking at too. Cheers!

Crikey, that's a sleeper isn't it. Never even knew about that car.

Got a decent review on TG when it first came out if I recall.

Why does it need to be sub 7 seconds?

With a remap you will get close to 300hp and upwards of 400nm.....but nearly £500 a year for road [STRIKE]theft[/STRIKE] tax and low 20's mpg its too steep for the running costs if you do any sort of distance.

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201405254489298/sort/default/usedcars/postcode/mk439jb/radius/1501/model/s4/page/1/make/audi/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew?logcode=p

0-60 in 5 point something, £240 road tax, 265 bhp & 400 Nm without remap

Stay off the boost and it'll do 30+ mpg, get on the boost and you're grinning all the time

pretty much unbeatable to my mind, only problem is you won't get one newer than 2001

OP....buy it, it'll be the best £3k you'll ever spend

Vectra is OK if you only drive in straight lines though :)

Mazda was the quickest around the track, Ford 2 seconds slower and the Vauxhall a second or so slower than that.

Look at the Saab 9-5 Aero too, £4000 should get you a 06/56 plate with decent mileage.... 260 bhp, 6 & a bit sec 0-60 & the comfiest seats you've ever sat in ;)

It doesn't need to be but that's what the OP wants, which is his prerogative.

    There's no road tax.

Skoda Octavia vRS, petrol if mpg not a big issue or a diesel version if mpg a concern but it is a bit slower.

I've had my petrol Octavia vRS estate for 4 years and love it. Reliable, cheap to maintain and a massive boot. It also has a chain cam belt so no expensive replacements every 4 years.

I agree, had a petrol Octavia vrs mk2 for over 3 years.
    Mega reliable,faster than Mondeo ST220 and 30mpg.
You'll be lucky to get 22mpg from the ST.
