I take it I go on to the BT.com site and look for the MAC request form or is there another place to find it

I tried to link you to the form but the forum is not letting me hyperlink with a low post count.

If you go to google and type "BT How do I request a MAC code?".

Go to the page of the same title (should be the first) or click I'm feeling lucky. Scroll down the page to the section 'Moving to another provider from BT' then click the link titled 'Submit your request online'.

You don't need to renew your package but if you can't get a better deal and would consider switching, Plusnet are good. They use the same equipment as BT (unlike Sky and TalkTalk who use their own in some places) so the broadband service should be the same and their customer service itself is much better than BT, it is all UK based. They will also work out cheaper in the long run as their full price for an unlimited broadband package is £9.99 a month (incl. weekend calls too).

PS: TopCashBack will currently give you £105 for signing up!

Basically you sign up to it for free with your email address, go through the link on the TopCashBack website to Plusnet's website and it will detect the purchase, giving you £105 in return.

Edit: there's also an MSE explanation of cash back sites here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cashback-websites
  • Thanks for everyone's comments. Yes, in the end I paid the line rental upfront. (With £100 from the Co-op switch and £60 compensation from Barclaycard I took the attitude that the banks have paid my line rental.

Thanks for the tip about the Mac code form online. I'll try that one next year. I don't really want to leave BT because I never had a problem with their product - it's never let me down.

Interestingly, having already negotiated the deal for another 12 months with BT I'm now getting phonecalls from BT saying "Don't use your Mac Code, stay with us!" But they didn't give me a Mac Code!

How do the Co-op and Barclaycard schemes work? I am about to pay BT upfront for line rental.
  • Hi Husk,

Sorry for any confusion. The Co-op £100 is from switching a current account to them, as per their current promotion. (I shall move the account again, because their website is awful - at least it's not my main current account.)

The Barclaycard £60 is compensation because their staff insulted me during a phonecall (thank heavens call are recorded - Head Office listened to it and agreed I'd been insulted.)

So I'm using this money to cover the cost of the line rental.

well as promised I will update everyone on the latest.
I sent the email off to BT as advised by Husk and a lady from BT contacted me about 20 minutes ago by phone talking about the email.
She initially came back to me with £15.99 line rental, £7 anytime calls, £14.54 unltd broadband, the exact same offer as I had received from then when I had previously called them. She reduced it for same bundle to £31.64 per month, I said I didn't feel this was of much use to me as I can get this cheaper with Talk talk, PlusNet and Sky, she told me she would ring me back in a couple of minutes and when she did the offer now is £6.65 unltd broadband, £5 for unltd calls and £15.99 line rental coming in at £27.64 including free caller display, or £22.64 with just weekend calls included oh and I can have BT sport as well.
Tried to get her to change my router from Homehub2 to Homehub 5 but no luck.
I know this may not be the cheapest but do you think its ok, is there anything else I am missing and what's the chances with changing hub?
  • Hi seert,

Re your HomeHub query - I got mine upgraded last year (from HH2 to HH4) because I was having problems with it. Apparently ( so Sales told me) while you're under contract with BT your hub is under guarantee. If you're having any problems with it (wifi signal dropping?) it may be worth giving Technical support a call.
