Mmm not sure if you mean I'm a smelly, badger eater or I eat smelly badgers however either is apt I guess my secret is out ! If you ever need any badger recipes do let me know."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I haven't read the whole of the thread so apologies if this has already been posted.
When a car is found by police, say it has been hotwired; they will get it recovered for forensic reasons (this is normally paid for by insurance companies).
If it is just abandoned and appears not damaged, they will leave it where it is unless it is causing an obstruction.
To contact the onwer of the car (if they haven't reported it as stolen already) they rely on the address that your car is registered to with DVLA. The only way they can contact you is to try directory enquiries or to ask a police officer to knock on your door.
firstly, not everybodys registered address is up to date.
secondly, lots of people are now ex-directory so unable to contact by phone.
lastly, there is such a shortage of police for emergency jobs that asking an office to call at an address will take days.
So when a car is found, trying to get hold of the owner to say "do you want us to get it recovered - it will cost X amount" will take forever!!
However to the person who started the thread, if you feel that strongly about the money, you could make a complaint to the local police inspector where you live. Phone your local station, and the inspector will normally call you back.
Hope this helps0 -

No, sorry, ... it's a subscribers only site. So the link would be useless I'm sure
I'm sure they won't mind though, it;s free advertising for them :rotfl:0 -

Apologies to Butlers1982 and to MJR600
I get rather hot under the collar with issues I'm passionate about but its no excuse for some of the personal remarks0 -
Its not much of a fee though and far cheaper than a total loss situation. It costs the same as around two tanks of petrol.
Or more than a weeks pension for a pensioner
I am in agreement with the OP, the police should have attempted to contact the owner or pay the fee themselves, they wanted to fingerprint it,(without the owners consent), that could be construed as "TWOCking"Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Hi I work for the Police and in my area, yes the insurance covers it most of the time ie. accident.insurance will pay out to the Police. In regard to the fingerprinting this is essential to get a conviction as most offenders are caught and repeat their crimes in the same area.
So are you saying that you don't want the police to catch the person that stole your car?
2NDLY - when your car is sent to be examined it has to be stored in a safe place for the examiner to attend and most times the Police do pay the bill in this event as they are dealing with a crime of theft and to prosecute need to have the vehicle examined. If your not happy, they follow you local force;s complaint procedure. As I think you will find the police will pay.
Is your area got a high crime rate?0
