Fear of expensive insurance claim restricts travel

I am always suspicious of travel insurance companies and have doubts that they will pay up. I have just had to put in a modest claim for a gastroenteritis episode during a trip to Turkey (cross fingers). I find that these fears put me off risking any trip to countries like the USA. If something were to happen and the insurers refused to cover it, I would be completely stuck. Does anyone else find that similar concerns prevent them from visiting some countries outside the EU?

No. Life is to short for irrational fear of the 'what if's' preventing me from living it,
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear

Pay more money for a good policy from a good broker, you get a better service and a simpler settlement

Has your Turkey claim been refused? If not, what are you basing your fears on?

No the Turkey one has not been refused. Insurer only got my claim today. Hopefully it will be paid but is affordable if the insurer refuses. A sudden illness in the USA would be very different.

So your fear is without basis? Sounds a tad irrational to me.

But we don't know how good the service will be until it is put to the test . Then it could be too late.

If you thought that way about everything you'd never leave the house! Perhaps you are better to holiday at home?

You can get a broad idea from the DeFaqto ratings and from people's recommendations. Hiscox are generally rather good, for instance.

Why ? I play golf with a guy who holidayed in Florida last September.
Unfortunately he took ill and had to have a triple bypass. His USA stay was extended by 'only' three weeks, wonderful treatment and was back on the golf course late January.Insurance covered everything.
AND the good news , his single holiday insurance for this summer has only increased by £100. A bargain as he had thought his trips abroad were gone for good.

So O.P get back to us when things have already gone wrong, because in the vast numbers of cases, all reputable Insurance works.

I have holidayed in many different places but mostly within Europe . Just wanted to find out whether any others had the same concerns as I sometimes do.
