Terrified of flying for the first time, what's it like?

Im not frightened of flying, i'm frightened of the plummeting and death..... but i put up with it for the sake of my husband who loves going abroad. If i had my way, i would never fly again. I won't go anywhere longer than a couple of hours. I once went to Florida and sat with my eyes shut the whole time.!! I'm flying again in July and already dreading it...0

I love flying, but I have to have a window seat, or my motion sickness gets me reaching for the sick-bag! The planes make a lot of noise, grinds, bumps, whirrs as everything does its job, just so you know. Other item I found alarming was the outside of the engine looks like it is coming off when you land, this is just so they can use the engines to push air forward to slow you down more.
Trust you have a smooth flight, and hope you enjoy so much you are booking your next flight straight after!0 -
Take some chewing gum or boiled sweets for the landing.. the change in air pressure can make some people's ears pop or hurt a bit.
I still enjoy the rush of acceleration at take off
The worst thing about flying is the security theatre before you even get on the plane0 -
Can anyone tell me what to expect?
Other than the you take off/you're in the air for a bit/you land aspect, not really. Everyone's different when it comes to flying so there's no way to predict how you'll react but hopefully it won't freak you out too much.
It sounds like I'm the opposite of a lot of people here - I'm really not a fan of take off and landing (the change in pressure hurts my ears but, as other people have suggested, boiled sweets or drinking water can help) but love the nothingness of the middle part of a long flight.
At least it's only a short flight so if you find you're not keen on it you know you've only got a couple of hours until it's finished.0 -
flyins is nice, just try to think of something else, dont overthink, just try tp breathe and enjoy, you are in the sky baby haha0

I hate flying. I really wanted to love it, but it makes me dizzy and sick. If you are at all prone to motion sickness, take some kind of medication before you fly - or sit near the toilets!0

I am an OAP and still love looking out the window on the plane. It really is like a coach that takes off. The noises have been mentioned they soon stop once up and level and start again a bit before you land, all normal. Take a snack or buy a coffee it will help to pass the time. Bumps are normal and come and go, only on a few flights0
