I was pretty set on joining esporta a few months ago. I checked around belfast and rates were tending from mid £20s upwards depending where you went. Esporta - £58 with the qub corporate discount. No negotiation. No follow up.

All this in the face of rapidly declining membership numbers. If esporta belfast are a guide for esporta in general, they are pricing themselves into real problems.
    Always overestimating...

    Anyway....

If your goals are to get results and not merely to pace around a gym doing some reps, then you cant look past Centaur Gym in Aurthur Street. People like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mary Peters, Bill Pearl and Shadow from the Gladiators have trained there.

Now, it isn't your usual beech and chrome gym. It's a dungeon of a place and only really suits people who are interested in making a real difference. It doesnt matter whether you're an elite athlete or somebody new to or returning to training - so long as you are interested in results. It's a real gym.

Centaur is the longest running gym in Belfast and is now under the ownership of paul Mcilroy, owner of possibly the best Body Transformation programme ever. Check him out at Paul Mcilroy dot com.

If you're the type who likes to hang around the gym to convince yourself you're getting fit or to try to meet wmen then Centaur definitely isn't for you. If you want to reach your fitness and health goals then you wont let the lack of a swimming pool stand in your way.

It's 20 quid a month with no contracts and no peak or off peak times. The only negative is that parking is an issue. you'll need to park somewhere else and walk round. If you work in town though, you're elected.

Good luck everyone with your training.

PS. The gym at conway mill is another good spot for those who really want to do better. It's in West belfast though so it wont suit everyone.
  • I agree with belfastgal on Fitness First . It's completely filthly. I was a member there for 5 years-but it went down hill rapidly the last 2 years of my membership and that's why I left. The tilling in the shower areas is so grimy it needs pulled off and retiled. Disgusting.

Also badly managed-staff too busy flirting with each other to actually acknowledge members. I turned up for a time tabled class and they just said there was no-one to take it-no apology or explanation. A member ended up taking it!!

They don't receive any feedback so have no chance to make improvements. I lost count of the times I was promised a staff call back to explain why classes were cancelled etc. Never did get the calls.

Def wouldn't recommend it. I go to Pure Fitness now which is great but it's mainly classes.

Pure Fitness is in Bloomfield Avenue, just along from Wyse Byse. As rfar as I know they only do fitness classes, you have to partake in group exercise rather than exercising to your own plan, but I'm happy to be corrected!

I have been using the swimming pool at LA Fitness at Adelaide Street over the last few months and I have not really been impressed. Seems to be quite cold often and overall wouldn't recommend. I don't know what the gym equipment etc is like tho.

The swimming pool at the PEC is going to be closed all over the summer this year, just for info, a friend of mine who works there was telling me so today...

Correction - there is a gym, albeit small. I've been a member at Pure for about 8 months, lost over a stone (I was a size 10/12 to start so not like I was fat!) and my fitness levels are great. Personally I've found the classes fantastic. Much easier to schedule a fixed time into my day for a class than just 'going to the gym this evening'. The gym is useful if you would rather just use the treadmill or bike one day but I think most members use the classes only. I was a member of Fitness First before that and can echo the other comments. Not great.

Yep - seems they're going to be doing it up! We're getting reduced membership though to compensate!
  • Hi
The Belfast YMCA in stranmillis does very flexible memberships with no tie ins or contracts.
Students only pay either £3 a day or £20 a month which includes classes too.
The gym is compact but very quiet during the day with a good range of equipment (free weights, olympic weights and machines) and cardio stuff.
Their carpark is free too and over the summer some classes are run outdoors. Definitely worth a go.

get them on 9068 4660 and ask for Jamie (the boss)
