they have a new deal nearly every month

    i.e no joining fee
    or bogof deals etc

best time to join is the last few days of the month as the sales team are trying to get there number of sales increased before a new offer and new month begins........

Just a thought on Queens PEC - always very busy when I used to go, used to spend a lot of time waiting on machines - I didn't really think it was that uptodate and didn't have enough of everything. Also went to Fitness First on Boucher I liked it - evenings were v busy but they have a lot of machines so you can usually get one without waiting, also good classes and good circuits room.

I had a loook around, esporta, LA Fitness (had a free week trial) and Daivd Lloyds. Ended up joingin David Lloyds out at the ice bowl. I think it is the most expensive gym there is, but it is heaven! Two pools, one outdoor which is open all year round. Both pools are really good sizes. Big gym. Different classes though it does somestimes seem to cater for those people lucky and rich enough not to have to work, for the times of some classes. In my opinion, this is the best gym&pool around. It does have raquet sports but you have to pay extra per month for that!
  • I realise i'm about a year late adding something to this thread. But hey it made very interesting reading for myself so i thought I'd make a contribution towards it.

I used to be a member of LA fitness (Adelaide St) up until a couple of months ago and like iceliquid said its a very nice gym. Good gym area, nice pool (small but not overly used in the evenings, when I went) and the staff seemed to be pretty friendly.

On the downside though it was pretty expensive at about £42 per month. So I personally was left feeling pretty guilty when I wasn't going and therefore gave it up. I'd recommend it, but only if you are going to make better use of it than i did.

I might give the robinson center a go now as I've been talking to a couple of members i know about it and it also seems to get good reviews. Plus its about half the price for me (work subsidised), which is always a plus point.

By the way i think Queens PEC is doing some sort of summer membership at the minute which might interest you if you are wanting to give it a trial run.

    Just to add my opinion.
Give Queen's PEC a very wide berth if you actually intend to do any form of exercise.
    It is exceptionally badly managed.
It has broken equipment that is never replaced/fixed.
There isn't enough equipment for the number of members.
It has a very poor class timetable with mediocre/poor instructors.
It works out very expensive if you take any classes.
However, they have or are still building a new extension which I assume they will fill with broken equipment and then charge their members more money for.
I persevered with the PEC for many years due to a misplaced sense of loyalty. I am now a member at Esporta which is excellent and have subsequently become even more aware of how shambolic the PEC is.

I'm in Breathe at the Robinson centre. It's as good as any Gym i've been to and the cheapest I've been a member of. Currently £21 for anytime use without pool. I think its £25 with pool. You have to give 3 months notice to quit these days though.

Fitness first at connswater is crap.the showers are filthy.the classes are usually cancelled without notice and they have only recently brought back their free newspaper. They have made their coffee lounge smaller to around 1/8 of the size previously and they don't do food anymore.
So what ?....you might ask....all these little extras were the reason we all signed up there to start with
    It has def gone downhill.
