Sat Navs.... Smart Phone Apps

Hi There
Before I start, I should explain that I am a bit of a techno
phobe and may ask silly questions.. :-)
I am planning to go to Belgium in June as was going to buy a map for my sat nav, but it was £50!!!
I have been thinking about downloading one for my Galaxy 3S to use instead but I don't know how these work. If I get one, does it have to use the 3G signal from my phone to work? I am cautious about using roaming as I made a 2 calls and 2 visits to facebook when travelling last year and racked up a bill of £471!
Do these sat nav things on mobile phones work when the 3G is disabled?
Apologies for the silly question. I just don't want to save £50 and spend hundreds...
Thanks in advance.
Petra

Download free nav which is free. It has maps included in download so you dont use data so you can turn off your data roaming. It just uses the GPS signal.0

Belgium is a lovely country and has incredibly cheap tobacco.
Just after you cross the border there's a town called Adinkerke also known as tobacco alley. The sole purpose of the town is to sell tobacco and drink to UK drivers. They prefer you to pay in Sterling and you can get a great full English breakfast there.
This website is handy and has some good vouchers and advice http://www.day-tripper.net/ http://www.day-tripper.net/tobacco-in-belgium.html0 -
As someone who has owned a couple of Samsung's, they are notorious for having very poor GPS reception. Before you go abroad and rely on your phone, make sure you take it for a dry run. Have a few trips around local towns, built-up areas, under trees.
if you start to have GPS reception issues, you might need to re-think.0 -
If you know where you plan on travelling in Belgium, you can download a portion of the maps on Google maps so that it can be used "offline"0

If you set the route up on wifi it still works fair worried me when it kept nagging me as I drove along with data turned off.
Provided you stick to the route it will keep on going using GPS.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0
