Surely the cheque was made out to you though? In that case it must have gone into your account or someone else with the same name which I would think is a massive coincidence.

Only if the teller checked. Which they patently didn't.

The debit wrong card was presented. Systems cannot randomly generate account numbers and sort codes.

Is there a possibility that you gave the cashier a credit card instead of your debit card and the cheque has been credited there (or a savings account card)?

Nope the correct debit card for my account was presented.

As above; in any case the payment has now cleared into the other persons account.

In all fairness if in doubt you could ask who ever gave you the cheque to cancel it and re issue. As theres a risk that the cheque could clear before the issue is resolved which may complicate matters.

Unfortunately it's too late for that but on the plus side having the receipt should make things easier to sort out tomorrow.
