Cheque paid into someone else's account

I usually check the account details on the receipt before leaving but for whatever reason didn't this time and I've just discovered that a cheque I paid into my account recently has been credited to someone else's account.

I've called telephone banking who say go to branch as there is nothing they can do over the phone. Visiting branch is not ideal for various reasons.

Anyway, I don't understand how this could happen when I used my card and pin to verify myself. This would bring up my details on the screen and require manual intervention to alter the pay in details. Or could there be a plausible reason for this error? Is anyone familiar with RBS systems and able to advise?

Thanks

Don't understand - how do you know it's been paid into someone else's account?
Do you still have the receipt slip the bank gave you?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Think you'll solve this one a lot quicker by going into a branch, not by asking random people on the internet.

Why is it not convenient to go back to the branch you visited to pay the cheque in?
Please confirm that you paid the cheque in using chip and pin/debit card or did they just use this to verify you.
Could you have been given somebody else's receipt in error? Have you actually checked your account online?

Lastly did this transaction really happen or did you have a bad dream. I had a horrible dream last night that for some reason I was working in Morrisons and all that fruit and veg they have the steam on was coming to get me!!

Yes, as mentioned in first paragraph.

I'm not looking for a solution to the problem here, I was asking if anyone knew of a potential reason for the error based on experience with RBS systems.

Not convenient because the branch is not local and I'm going abroad before I plan to be near the branch again.

Sorry that's what I meant by verify. They used the card to bring up my details, and then I confirmed the amount on the pin machine after the teller had keyed it in to their system.

Definitely not someone else's receipt as I saw it come out the printer.

Yes I've checked online account and noticed the cheque hadn't been credited which is what prompted me to check the receipt. Plus I have since checked with the payer and it has cleared in their account.

This suggests your receipt doesn't contain your account details, is that what you are saying?

Anybody can pay in a cheque into anyone's account, it doesn't have to be your own account.

Basically the bank teller made a mistake. It's up to bank to credit the money to your account.

Then it's up to the bank to get it back from the other account.

Also from memory, Would not the cheque have details printed by the bank on the cheque to show into which account the money went into.

Personally I would start rattling their cage if I were you.

The further you leave it the harder it will be to track the problem down.

Speak to their complaints section (details on their web site).

It should be possible for somebody to take ownership, liaise with the branch and sort this out.

If they respond by insisting you go into branch to resolve it let them know that you will invoice them 45p a mile plus car parking plus £10 an hour (including travel time) in addition to any goodwill payment that you expect at the end of this.

It's a really weird issue. I don't know their systems but it might be as simple as a cashier failing to complete the previous transaction. Good luck.

    Yes, that is correct.

I'm aware of that but all I said was "can I pay this cheque in please".

Interesting, wasn't aware that they printed that info on the cheque.

I gave the complaints department a call yesterday but they were closed. Seems they are also closed today due to bank holiday.

I called telephone banking again and the person I spoke to was very understanding. They took the account details from the receipt and confirmed that the payment had gone into that account and cleared.

They said that they could hand this over to a specific department to deal with and they would liaise with the branch and get it sorted but this could take a while. I told them this wasn't ideal and they advised that the quickest way to get this sorted would be to go to branch, who should credit it straight away. I now plan to do so on Tuesday as I need to get this sorted before I travel.

The advisor offered to raise a complaint so I took them up on this and will wait to see what they say. Like your thinking on invoicing them!

Thanks, hopefully I won't need any luck and it will be swiftly sorted on Tuesday.

Not ideal, but this isn't an ideal world.

Unfortunately in life, things take time to deal with. If a department isn't available until Tuesday, then they're not available until Tuesday. Likewise, I'm a director of a large company, and I'm not back in the office until 6am on June 2nd, as I want to spend the week with my children in my home country.

What is there to invoice them for?

When I ask to pay a cheque in, I'm always asked for an A/C and Sort Code. I paid in a cheque for a neighbour that doesn't drive last week, and asked for these details from her to be able to do so, knowing that Barclays won't take the cheque, as they can't tell me where she banks, or indeed whose account I was paying into (although could confirm this info as I paid it)

It's the complaints department that isn't available until Tuesday, I don't know when the department that would deal with the problem is open.

I accept that things take time to deal with and if I was not travelling out of the country later this week I would have let them get on with it in their own time.

I don't want to go abroad for nearly three weeks and leave this unresolved so I accept that the only alternative is to go back to the branch.

See PeacefulWaters post for suggestions on what I could invoice them for. I probably won't be doing this and will wait to see what the branch/complaints department say. Worth noting that the bank wouldn't hesitate to charge me were it my error that caused a payment to fail etc.

I have never been asked for the A/N and S/C when paying in a cheque and have never felt the need to volunteer this information as my card, or rather the system linked to my card, gives them it.
