Ooh how exciting I thought I was all alone here :rotfl:

    We'll have to have a MSE meet-up in T's :j

They're doing some building works at Caldicot, it's due to reopen mid/end June I think - wish they'd hurry up my DS loves it there

Unfortunately I live in Worcester now, but I still call Chepstow home and I'm back regularly :)
It's funny to think we might already know each other in RL though, 6 degrees of separation and all that!

I thought T's was much better when it had the restaurant, 'tekkie brekkie' got me through my A levels :rotfl:

Looks like I'm not going to get my bargain maltesers, the choccie deal has been expired on HUKD.

Thanks for the ideas. We love second handbooks, and castles. We nearly stayed in Hay itself, but I remember Monmouth as being lovely, or it was, 15 years ago! Our nearest pub will be the Inn at Pennallt, 10 minutes walk away from where we stay, which sounds good. We have been to all the big castles, but it was a while ago, and we will have to revisit some again. I am particulary liking the quirky suggestions of places to visit. Thanks everyone!

I'm assuming you'll know already, but just as a warning, take several bags-for-life or similar, as you'll get charged otherwise and it can add up, especially if you start working your way along the bookshops in Hay!

Found the book, but it's 'Wild Swimming - Hidden Beaches' so nothing inland; nearest featured beach is Merthyr Mawr Warren … probably too far away.

If you fancy a long walk (approx 9 miles) with stunning views, the Vale of Ewyas Horseshoe starts from Capel-y-ffin, about 30 miles north of Monmouth.

If you like country houses and gardens, Westbury Court (20 miles to east) is a splendid example of a late-seventeenth-century formal Dutch-style garden.

The AA Mini Guide to Wales says Monmouth is "a good base for an exploration of the picturesque Wye Valley and its lovely riverside walks"; recommends a visit to Tintern Abbey; and for food, the Bell Inn at Skenfrith gets a good write-up.

    Hope this helps.
Thanks Jelly. We'll have to see about that 9-mile walk. It sounds lovely. Our 5 days are going to be busy ones from the sound of it. I am eying the sunshine predictions for next week with a hopeful eye, and really fancy river swimming, even in bloomin' cold water!
I am not young enough to know everything.

Some friends of mine had a meal there the other weekend and they were very impressed :)
