Getting free additional driver

I recently booked a car in Texas and discovered that both Budget and Avis let you add a spouse/partner as an additional driver with no extra charge, but was advised via Avis' on-line chat not to select the option for additional driver when booking online if it is the spouse/partner as they will automatically add the charge, but to do it at the desk when we collect the car. Must have the same address on their licence and it is always quicker if you have the same name. They must also be there when you pick it up and you need passports, your return flight tickets, both parts of the licence and a credit card for this deal which isn't available to US residents.
I booked a one-way hire, so check if there are one-way fees as this can make a difference (up to $150 on the quotes via Kayak). Booked using a Snapfish promotion J881604 with Avis, so it was cheaper still and I get a free photo book. It was also much cheaper to book via the UK website than the US, included all the insurances with no excess and cost £25.48 a day all-inc for a Compact (Ford Focus) for the one-way hire, picking up and dropping off at airports.0 -
I've never heard of this Brits Guide and we are always hiring cars usually with Alamo.
It says free roadside assistance with every booking in the USA. However, when we went in January we had the big sell and a refusal to accept that free roadside. It wasn't a huge problem as we have an excess policy anyway, but we won't renew it.
On the recent email offer it also says free additional driver, but that was on an Orlando offer. May relate only to that in particular. We are flying to Philadelphia .
Edit to add: the Alamo site gives an extra driver in Pennsylvania, too. I will print out the page.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
