OK - I know this is dumb, and I know I should know, but.....
How do I password protect specific folders in my documents using XP?
Thanks!

Do you mean specific documents in your folders? hehe

There is no way of doing it without downloading software :)

For microsoft documents like word, you can password protect it IN word.. but thats a microsoft word thing, not a windows xp thing :)

You could encrypt the documents which means they can ONLY be opened on YOUR computer and NO ONE elses :)

Ignore that - I just found out and did it!
Just wondered whether I could protect a folder rather than each document that is within that folder.

you could always zip the document up and password protect the zip file using winzip!

Google free password protect folder and see what you get? :)

Sorry for being over-enthusiatic but I like this software so much and I use it every single day.

For the really daft, how would I go about putting a file on my memory stick into a zip folder and putting a password on it?
  • @gryphon: Just open Winzip (or which ever zip program you use), select the option to make a new file and add the password then, add the files from the memory stick then save the new zip either to disk (and then copy it to the memory stick) or directly to the memory stick.

@cindyhove: Passwords for Word documents and zip files are fairly easily broken. Truecrypt mentioned above is much more robust. The best for you will depend just how determined an 'attack' you are seeking to prevent on your data.
