I would report this to the company /shop asap.
Many cashiers will say you can add the points later.
I have no problem with this cashier losing their job on the tills - he/she can apply to stack shelves or collect trolleys.

But, if someone leaves their receipt in a trolley or drops it on the pavement I have no problem with 'wombling' those points. And if the employees collecting trolleys in the car park find a receipt with points they can claim that's ok by me too.

SO you think it is OK to steal if you need the money!! Not quite sure where that one ends, any robber could use it as an excuse.
Personally I'd go back to get my points and then express surprise that a card was used and let the store sort it out. Take the point others have made about having a chat with her - I doubt if I'd even remember who served me on any given day especially if it's a regular supermarket.

That's not what he said...the point is: what has it got to do with you if you don't even have card you could put the points on later? The spirit I get from most posts isn't that people are concerned about the money they have been robbed off but because it makes them feel superior if they can go ahead and cause someone to get sacked for the sake of 50 p...tell the person that you've seen it - everyone deserves a second chance..
  • Firstly, she will be breaking her rules of employment. You may, however, not care about that, because it's getting one back at the evil supermarkets, which is a reasonable reaction.

Secondly and more importantly, the loyalty points scheme is not a free gift to the customer, it is a marketing programme paid for by allowing for the cost within the price of the goods sold and this will be based on a known proportion of customers collecting and redeeming their points. If this cashier is skewing the redemption rate upwards, then that will put your prices up. It may not seem like much, but it isn't just your visit, it is those of many others who do not themselves collect the points. When you then multiply that up by all the other cashiers doing it, it could have a significant effect on pricing.

    Yes, report it.

It is a pretty sneaky way to profit from customers and not something any store's loyalty scheme would condone at all.

There's nothing on the receipt to show it's yours unless you paid by card.

Cashier may in fact have deliberately not asked for your loyalty card in the hope you would forget.

So if you saw the cashier pocketing a bit of extra change out the till on each transaction would you report them? (not your change but the supermarkets money) I know this is not quite the same as they WILL get caught if their till is under, but it is the same thing stealing from thir employer just this time "real" money.

@cookie1986 : If you think she shouldn't get involved how mean would it be to write to head office? You either get involved or not..if you confront her in the supermarket I highly doubt she would compromise her safety..[/QUOTE]

The OP suspects that a reward card has been used fraudulently. This is a matter between the operator of the reward scheme and its employee. The OP does not need to act as the judge and jury. If the OP approaches the cashier then how do they know if they are telling the truth?@judywoody your statement ”You either get involved or not” does not make sense. The OP does not have to have a confrontation with the cashier or just forget the matter, that’s just ridiculous.

I think @judywoody you will find I said a potentially dangerous position. The cashier could be nice and friendly or perhaps they won’t be, from the scenario given we just don’t know. Either guilty or not the cashier may not be happy to be accused of fraud in a public place. The OP does not have to take that chance.
Reporting the matter to the head office is as mean as reporting a suspected crime to the police, ultimately it is them who would investigate following what is hopefully a fair procedure, which to me is more fair than confronting somebody in public.

Regardless of who the cashier is suspected of stealing from fraud is fraud. Just because the cashier is stealing from a supermarket does not make it ok (and I have been paid a lowly supermarket wage and I have strong sympathy for the way in which people who work in retail are treat).

To break down the question. The OP thinks they have evidence for potential fraud morally should they report it? I fail to see how the answer could be anything other than yes.

If it wasn't too inconvenient, I might go back to the same cashier next time I was in the shop. Put through my shopping and say I hadn't got my card.....just as the transaction finished I would suddenly "find" my card in my pocket and then ask HER how I can now claim my points.

Depending how she reacted at that point, I might call a supervisor OR if she would "fess-up" to me personally, put it right, then I would tell her I was onto her and she'd better stop doing it or I would report her officially.

Hopefully it would serve as a warning and hopefully she would learn a lesson and keep her job.

This answer is the fairest one, I think. Yes, the amount is probably very small and won't make much difference to the OP, and yes, losing your job over this may be a bit harsh. BUT, at the end of the day it is still stealing.

I'm happy to (and have in the past) give away school vouchers to other customers, donate car park validating receipts to charity reps and wouldn't mind allowing points to be scanned by a checkout staff member, if they asked me first. But taking those things without asking is theft, no matter how small the amount, and I would definitely take issue with it.

Going back and trying to catch her out is a good way of handling it, as you can then confront her and find out the motive. As others have said, it's better to give someone a chance to fess up or explain themselves first.

And you never know, it may have been nothing more than a system cockup...
  • REPORT her this is fraud and companies, especially established brands, take this very seriously with their employees.

The only time its ok for anyone to use their card on your shop is if you have given them permission to do so and NEVER staff. Staff have their own discount and loyalty scheme in nearlly all cases!!
