    Hi all,
Just recently found this thread and what a font of knowledge you all are! My little boy is going through the AQE this year and is not reading the question properly!! Any tips on how to cure that?!
  • Hi Darcy, I have the same problem with my daughter, she just rushes through the questions without reading them properly and then makes silly mistakes. She usually has about 20-25 minutes left when she finishes but still doesn't seem to pick up on her mistakes. Don't know how to get her to take her time 😁 v frustrating.

    Hi Darcy

If you have not already done so, you could advise him to read the questions not once, not twice but 3 times OR to read questions at least 3 times. I've been reinforcing that with my son and it seems to have helped as he now makes a lot less careless mistakes. What scores is your son averaging in practice tests?

Hi Darcy, my daughters teacher told them they shouldn't have anymore than 5 to 10 mins left to go over any corrections. If they have any more time than that they are rushing the questions and are going to make silly mistakes. Does he know whereabouts in the paper he should be roughly when you tell him 15 mins, 30 mins etc. Maybe if he knew he had enough time to read the question fully he would cut down in the silly mistakes (but they all make silly mistakes). Welcome to our wee group Darcy.

Hi- thanks for the tips. He is getting tutored and his tutor said to me that there was no point tutoring him in maths as he is really strong in this area and she would just focus on the English. I agreed with her but in mid September when he had been bringing home the AQE past papers from school I analysed (!) them and realised that his maths was really letting him down. I think the maths questions are too 'wordy' for him. Give him a really hard maths equation he will work it out but add words and peoples names into the mix it just doesn't work for him.
He has been averaging about 78% but when we go back over and count up the silly mistakes he could be getting 94%.
I just hope that he reads the question correctly next Saturday!
  • Hi Darcy - welcome to our group - I'm finding it a great support as our primary school is not coaching so everyone here has been very helpful & given me lots of useful info.

Yes Flytothemoon our familiarisation day is Wednesday 5th - time is just flying in now! Where did you get all those lavender products please?

Darcy do you think he is just not spending enough time reading the question? Even if he does score an average of 78% this should still be enough to get him into a grammar school. I know it is very frustrating when you go over the papers and there are silly mistakes in questions they know how to do. Hopefully on the day all our kids will bring their "A game".
  • Hi all, daughter familiarisation day is Monday 3rd which I will be glad as she will know what to expect on the day. Lots of her friends have already had there's.

Hi Darcy another tip which I found with my daughter is Get your son to underline the key points in the question.I felt this helped my daughter focus more on what the question was asking.

Not long now and they will have the first week done and the stress levels can go down lol

Mrs Mum-- I think that is exactly it, he is not spending enough time on reading the question. I think it's a wee bit of laziness as well! Hopefully on the day of the test he will concentrate more and not make the silly mistakes!
Motherearth- I will encourage him to underline the key points of the question but when I'm not sitting beside him all my 'tips' go out the window and then the silly mistakes appear!
Good luck for the familiarisation day- I found this really useful and hopefully DS did as well!!!
