How is he performing at school in general? -if he is holding his own with normal school/homework I would suggest perhaps nerves are playing a part in the low practice test.
You could consider having a chat with his teacher and see what he/she thinks in regards to his academic ability. Whatever way you choose it will all work out for the best. Grammar school is not always the be all and end all. :)
  • he's pretty average in school, definitely not at the top of the class but has never really struggled. he does have problems with his attention but this is managed well and his teacher has no major issues with it. I've written a note to his teacher to call me this afternoon so we will see what she suggests. he also goes to a tutor once a week, his tutor feels that he will not get high enough in his tests but has also reiterated the fact that a grammar school may not be for him, so do we put him through the stress of the exam? its tough being a mum!

Has your son expressed a wish to pull out of the exam? My friends daughter sat the exam even though my friend knew she would not score enough to get her into a grammar school but her daughter wanted to give it a bash anyway. Now when she got the score it wasn't high enough to gain entry into a grammar but the child and her parents were really happy with her score and effort she put in. I think if it was me I would allow my child to decide and just let him know that you will support him and be proud of him whatever he decides. Hopefully though your sons teacher will steer you in the right direction for your son. I'm sure you will make the right decision for your son as no one knows him better than you.

Oh mumoftwo1984, just thought I would mention also, a relative of mine has 2 boys, 1 at grammar and the other at a secondary school. The child at grammar is miserable at school and the child at secondary is loving school. Grammar schools really aren't the be all and end all!

I'm wondering if anyone else has been through the questions for 2009 paper 3. I'm a bit puzzled by questions 33-34. The first pattern contains 5 tiles and the second pattern 13 tiles. Question 34 asks what is the area of the third pattern. By drawing I work this out to be 25 tiles which I think is the right answer. However if I was asked how many tiles are in pattern 6 or pattern 8 I wouldn't have a clue. Is there a mathematical background to this sequence as there sometimes is to others eg square numbers? Thanks to all in advance for any reply you may send me - I seem to keep having difficulty with my password so may not get back on. Really enjoying all your posts - good to know we're not the only people doing this!

Lol, ok so I didn't have a clue but I asked my 10 year old daughter and she looked at me and started laughing!! According to your numbers of 5, 13 and 25 you add on 4 to the difference between the two numbers, so pattern 6 would be 61 and pattern 8 would be 113. Hope this is as clear as mud! Ha ha
  • Hi Mrs Mum

Thanks for getting back to me - I will have to take your daughter's word for it as I'm not starting to draw those! Let's just hope the pattern on the big day is a bit more manageable - I thought that paper overall was tricky.

Regarding the Grammar/ non-Grammar question. When we were choosing for our son, we felt the attitude of the school and the principal were more important. As it happens, first choice went to a grammar. Second choice would have been a nearby non-selective school. One of the Grammars on our original list did not make the final choices.

Has anyone heard any minimum scores accepted this year for Victoria College? I know 2013 was 88, 2012 and 2011 were both 91. I'm wondering if it was still around the same score this year.

 Starting to stress a bit now

  • Got a letter this week about the familiarisation day. It is next week. After a very shaky September, with surprisingly low scores in school practice tests, thankfully my son has settled down a lot over the past 2 weeks. I was really worried that maybe he wouldn't be able to handle the pressure so I got him a tutor - even though he didn't want one! After just 3 weeks with the tutor he has really settled down and scores have climbed steadily to high 70s and today he got 86% in school. :T I am so relieved. I knew he was quite capable of scoring in the 80s, I just hope he maintains his focus for the next 7 wks.
