Ebay was once king for me but its just not worth the risk anymore especially for clothing with sizing issues etc. You could probably give stuff away on ebay and some buyers would still find problems and mark you down for this and that as they know they have you over a barrel.
If you are taking paypal then you have exactly the same exposure as you do on ebay.
It's just that with so few sales a smaller site feels safer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I have no issues accepting PayPal, I just don't like using ebay anymore for both buying and selling.
In 35 sales on Depop I haven't had a single issue compared with my last two ebay sales where I had problems with both. Despite doing everything by the book and bending over backwards I ended up with a defect for both when I was totally not at fault. Yeah Depop is small and if it gets popular they will probably have to adapt but until then, i'm happy.0 -
Not for much longer, they're parting later this year.
I'll be interested to see how the ebay 'hold' on new seller's money goes.
As Paypal will be a separate company, can't see ebay being able to make them sit on the funds. And Paypal could find themselves in court for holding on to customer's money.
They can get away with it now, because they can say they are the same company, much harder when Paypal is a separate standalone company for them to hang on to funds on a whim.0 -

It is a paypal hold though- so if paypal wish to 'protect buyers' by holding funds from newly registered users then I can't see there will be much difference.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I'd wonder if Ebay are planning to introduce an "Ebay Payments" system that would be managed by Paypal but be a different entity..0 -
As Soolin says I don't really see the distinction and it's not as though Paypal are the only ones who do it. All the other payment gateways do it too, Amazon included. I've actually just had a hold from Paypal for payments through my new website, so it's not exclusive to Ebay anyway.

That's an Interesting thought , eBay payments managed by PayPal . There are certainly similar ideas already out there where a merchant supplies a customised payment system for a particular site.
It will be interesting to see if there are any changes to how we as sellers and buyers 'see' using PayPal on eBay in future, or whether the change will be so smooth we won't even notice. I would expect the latter, but knowing eBay they are bound to mess it up somehow.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. What I am curious about is once the tie between eBay and PayPal is severed will eBay continue to make PayPal a compulsory payment option.0

The issue really is how would eBay sell their 'guarantees' to buyers if buyers could potentially buy from sellers who did not offer PayPal.
Buyers expect to be covered against issues, I can't see many wanting to buy from sellers if PayPal was not an option. I frequent a number of Facebook seling sites and even on many of those sites buyers are warned to only use PayPal if they don't know a seller and to avoid unsafe payment methods like bank transfers at all costs.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I have to agree, i've had about 450 sales on depop since last July, about 5 problems from those (and one of those was lying about not receiving an item, had the cheek to block me and relist it thinking i wouldn't notice) which are nearly all related to missing/damaged items in the post, no complaints about the actual items at all. On the other hand I've had about 100 ebay sales since then and about 15 of those i've had a problem with!
The only downsides I would say about depop is that its quite hard to 'promote' your items as apposed to ebay there isn't such a large audience, and people do want more of a bargain on there so I usually sell them for a few pounds cheaper, it's worth it to avoid the hassle on eBay though. I really hope depop takes off! :j0
