I would also add that we are at the end of a very long line (just under 6km - 60dB+ downstream attenuation). I currently get 2.5Mbps down / 768Kbps up on Sky Broadband MAX (upto 16Mb).

Our ADSL was installed a few years ago to replace an existing ISDN2 connection so all the wiring was replaced by a BT engineer when removing the ISDN box and moving the socket. In addition, when the 512K ADSL was enabled we had a call from the exchange to see if anyone was at home shortly followed by an unscheduled visit from a BT engineer to "check the wiring" in our house.

When I checked my ring wire a while back, I found that the BT engineer had already disconnected the ring wire in my master socket - I have no extension wiring and only one telephone line.

It seems that the BT engineers were aware of the ring wire issue even back then.

    Thanks

    Gavin

No, you have no extension, therefore you have no need for a ring wire to be connected from nowhere to nowhere.

The master socket only has two incoming connections the A & B line which go the the A & B pins ( 2 & 5) on your master socket.

The master socket is called the master socket because it's slightly different to the slave sockets (extensions) The master socket includes a ring capacitor and resistor and this is then connected to pin 3 internally.

When you have a slave socket extension these don't come with a ring capacitor, so you connect up pin 3 from the slave to pin 3 of the master, to link up to the ring circuit.

If you have no extension wiring, you would not have a ring wire to disconnect, simply line in pair to the A & B terminals.

Bearing in mind the wiring had all been replaced by BT, coming into the NTE5 master socket, two of the redundant wires had been snipped back completely but the ring wire had been previously hooked up as it was much longer and I could see markings on the wire sheathing where it had been connected.

Anyhow, this is the article I read a while back which has some good photos:

I can only repeat that is definitely how it was wired up - I am not arguing that it was correct.
  • WOW!! Childsplay to do and increased from 3-4000kps to 6300kps on a 8mb line with max 7mb speed. IT WORKS PEOPLE!!
  • When the BT men re-connected my phoneline they only connected the blue and white wires, the orange ones were just rolled up, they know what they're doing and dont waste time connecting redundant wires. go for it, can't do any harm.

Was this the extensions or the master socket?

The master socket only has 2 wires anyway.

Your quite right, it was the master, I had extensions disconnected because my extension phone is digital, lesson is: don't reply in threads when I should be in bed.
