i know you were. it is just that it is never as simple as it first seems and it would be typical that i have alarm cable. i have disconnected the wires from pins 3 and 4. i now have to wait and see if my service re-trains itself beack up to the speed i get from the master socket

just a thought - why do you need to disconnect the wires in pins 3 & 4 at the extensions?

ok heres what i have done. like i said i generally have a high connection and throughput from the master socket. i reconnected the face plate and had the router attached to the front. you can see from the figure below that my adsl max service regrades itself.

    1st Aug @21:52
downstream 4288kbps (from modem setup screen)
    upstream 448kbps

    2nd Aug @ 06:15
    downstream 4928
    up 448
ip profile 3500kbps (from bt speedtester)
    actual 3185

    2nd Aug @ 16:00
    down 4128
    up 448
    ip profile 3500
    actual 2914

    3rd aug @ 1640
    down 4224
    up
    448
    ip profile 3500
    actual 201

now i have disconneted the wire from behind the master switch only

    down 5472
    up 448

so fingers crossed this has worked. i will give it a few hours before checking the ip profile on the bt speed test but just downloading large files, the speed it around 2.6 meg.

just an update for anyone considering doing this. i have given the system a few days to settle down and have run http://speedtester.bt.com/

    my results are now
    connection 5984kbps
    ip profile 5000kbps
    actual throughput 4617kbps

additionally i have moved the router to the extension nearest my pc which is actually the furthest socket from the master. so i am happy with this and think that the removal of the wires has definetly helped.

    cheers everyone.

No it's a maybe depending on many factors like line attenuation, signal to noise margin, quality of extension wiring etc. etc. but many have found that a few minutes work has a marked effect on their speed. Your ISP could even be limiting your speed, so no it won't work of everyone.

When i tried it last night i found that there was only the blue and white wires connected. The orange and white wires had been split off to use in a second telephone box i had connected for work.

I would also add that we are at the end of a very long line (just under 6km - 60dB+ downstream attenuation). I currently get 2.5Mbps down / 768Kbps up on Sky Broadband MAX (upto 16Mb).

Our ADSL was installed a few years ago to replace an existing ISDN2 connection so all the wiring was replaced by a BT engineer when removing the ISDN box and moving the socket. In addition, when the 512K ADSL was enabled we had a call from the exchange to see if anyone was at home shortly followed by an unscheduled visit from a BT engineer to "check the wiring" in our house.

When I checked my ring wire a while back, I found that the BT engineer had already disconnected the ring wire in my master socket - I have no extension wiring and only one telephone line.

It seems that the BT engineers were aware of the ring wire issue even back then.

    Thanks

    Gavin

If you have no extension wiring, you would not have a ring wire to disconnect, simply line in pair to the A & B terminals.
