    Thanks for the replies everyone, it seems it's not such a bad thing as I was thinking, unfortunately the option to knock the two together is not practical due to the house layout and neither is the toilet big enough to install a sink in, which is not an issue for me because living alone I never shut the doors anyway so just seamlessly move between the two without having to touch anything with my dirty hands.

    However I have taken note of the hand sanitizer idea (good idea that) so will stick one of those in the toilet for the occasional guest to use :-)

    Are you sure you can't fit a sink in? My parents have an incredibly slim basin in their downstairs WC. Google slimline cloakroom basins and you might be suprised.
