Would you buy a house that didn't have a family bathroom?

I have bought two houses like this. In the first one we left it as was although many neighbours knocked theirs through. In the current house which has two other loos in addition to the lonely one we moved it into the bathroom which was plenty big enough and the old loo now holds the hot water tank and some rails for drying clothes which are hugely useful.0

This is how my house is set up and so is my parent's house and I prefer it as when someone is in the bath, it means someone can use the loo (we only have one toilet in the house).
To get around the pee on the handle problem, we have a Carex pump thing set up to reduce the nasty bugs, mum and dad have anti bac wipes in theirs.
My previous houses had the toilet and bath in the same room and as the boys got older, it became a real pain in the bum!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I grew up in this type of house (back when that is how they were all built
). Never seemed to be a problem.
But what is the 'pee on the handle' problem? That is a serious piece of bad aiming.

The door handle, not the toilet flush. Without a sink in the toilet room, the door handle will be "contaminated" from unwashed hands.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Think yourself lucky you haven't got a daughter who spends half an hour in the bathroom whilst you're desperate for a pee! If you had, you'd know what a boon your present layout is."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0

I'll be honest about this, I'm not a big hand washer, it doesn't bother me to eat peanuts from the bar, I'm hardly ever ill, I think people worry too much about hygiene, as long as it's all decent and cleaned and bleach on a reasonably regular basis I don't see the problem.
Separate toilets and bathrooms are usually next door, it's just as easy to pull a wall down to get through as it is to put one up to re-separate it. Don't worry about it.0 -

 People like you are exactly why I would never eat peanuts from the bar. :eek:0 -
I think a lot depends on where the rooms are - as others have said, they are often side by side which leaves the option of knocking them through if you (of a new owner) wishes.
My last house had them separate. It was mildly irritating due to having to go out of one room and into the other to wash my hands, and had I stayed in the house I would probably have got around to knocking the rooms into one eventually, which would have made a good sized bathroom. The set up tends to be inefficient in use of space as you have 2 separate doors.
I think the ideal (particularly for a 3 bed where the appeal is more for families) is to have a bathroom including the loo, ad a separate downstairs loo for those occassions when someone is wallowing in the bath, but if there is only one WC then having it separate from the bathroom is a good idea, particularly if you are able to squeeze a small sink in.
I have just moved from a 2 bed with separate WC and bathroom to a 3 bed with a bathroom - the total size of my current bathroom is smaller than the one in the previous house would have been had it been knocked into a single room, and I think that is fairly common, so I think that provided the two are next to each other so knocking them through is an option, it is not going to be a major issue. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
We had both - in a standard 30s 2 bedrooms plus box room- seperate loo upstairs next to the bathroom and under the stairs a second toilet .I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

The fact you don't see the problem is the problem.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
