Pub - Noise Pollution

Options
Hi all, bit of a rant/advice needed. Approximately 18 months ago I moved into a house just down the road from a pub.

Since then, the majority of weekends it has music blaring out - usually from approx 6pm to 11.30 or so. I've complained to my local council about 30-40 times and all they say is they've logged it and they'll have people monitor it when they're in the area. As far as I know this has been twice in the 18 months, and they've not been around when it has been happening. Is there anyone else I can contact about it? It'll soon be too warm for my 17 month old daughter to sleep without the window being open, and there is no chance she will sleep through these levels.

The pub had been told to keep their door shut, which they don't (they keep it open with people drinking out on the street even though there are signs saying it is illegal) I've told the council this, but they haven't followed it up.

Would calling the police do any good at all? Reluctant to do so as it seems small fry, but it's driving us mad and I can see it really affecting my daughters quality of sleep.

I accept that there's always going to be some noise, but it really is far above acceptable levels (I've played in various bands before, I know when something is loud!)

Sounds a bit daft, but you were the one who moved near to a pub (we live about 100 yds, if that, from a pub and have the same thing on a weekend but knew about it before we moved in) and 6-11:30 is opening time so you are going to get noise. About the best you may get is if it is too loud, don't know what the permissible level is OTOH though. It could be within acceptable level and you just live somewhere that amplifies the sound, dunno

What made you choose this location?
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.
  • With all due respect, I don't think my decision to move here has much to do with it. As I said in the OP I expected some noise, but I know for a fact that these levels are unacceptable. The bass vibrates the foundations of the house, shaking the crockery for gods sake!

Read my post, your best bet is if it is too loud, find out what the acceptable levels are from the council and see if you can find out what the noise levels are in the pub when the music is on, Do you have a smart phone, I know you can get an app that is a decibel meter, maybe a trip to the pub when the music is playing and a quick measure would work, at least then you could go to the council with some figures and get them to go round and measure. Speak to neighbours, have they got the same problem? have they complained? if you can all get together it may make the council pay more attention.
  • I've done the db app and sent videos and audio recordings - the council just say it sounds unacceptable but they can't do anything until they catch them in the act

get together with neighbours and start pressuring the council, the more neighbours the better
  • Thanks - good idea. Just hope none of them are dedicated patrons! Haha. Maybe I'll drop in a few notes anonymously saying if they agree it's too loud to call the contact dealing with the case. Though I say 'dealing with' lightly

But surely knowing there was a pub nearby you visit the location at different times to test your theory. What made you come to the conclusion there would be " some" noise ( ie little noise? Was it wishful thinking?

I popped by every Friday and Saturday night for the 3 or 4 weeks I had to search for a new place (with the new baby we desperately needed a bigger house). It was near silent those weeks. It seems to be mainly Sunday night, which I didn't expect - and I did my 'research' in the cooler months. I didn't think they would be encouraging their customers to break the law by drinking outside (they take bar stools and tables out the front, and put them in the road) and then turning the music up so they could hear it.

But again, surely it doesn't matter - if the pub is making excessive noise, they are making excessive noise. My argument here isn't that they are making the noise, I'm asking how/if I can take it higher - since the council have acknowledged the noise pollution but are doing nothing about it.

This was a recent recording, recorded from inside my daughter's bedroom at approx 10pm

I do sympathise , I don't see that reporting it to the police would do any harm.
I believe it's the environmental health department that investigate noise pollution
