Whilst agreeing with some of that, look at it this way, how often does someone buy a kitchen?

If you are expecting the same margin as a pint of milk, you are always going to be disappointed!

Yes, there are still a few rip off merchants out there, but some of the worst (Moben etc.) have thankfully fallen in the last few years...

I actually still have the same MFI units in stalled 17 years ago now, apart from a cooker housing door that had to be re-finished (solid oak) due to a spillage of oven cleaner, they are still perfectly good. Partly I believe due to have been fitted properly by me :o:o

I'd sooner have a cheap kitchen fitted perfectly than a more expensive option done by a not so careful fitter.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Also after help with a Howdens quote. I can't get them to give me individual prices for each item though which is incredibly frustrating.

I know there is 70% discount on a lot of the items. Supposedly the max they can give on the Greenwich Shaker Cream range. So they tell me.

That one does not look so reasonable....baring in mind it is Greenwich, which is a cheap door, and no appliances are included...

I suggest you shop around a bit...either the branch or the fitter are making a nice margin on that one somewhere...

This is one of the most annoying things about kitchens in general, and Howdens in particular, is the lack of transparent pricing.

Howdens are possibly the worst offenders out of the big chains, but there are no saints!

Also bear in mind when purchasing via a fitter from Howdens that the warranty is via the fitter as you have no contract with Howdens, and that it is only five years.

Nothing wrong with the product, if you pay the right price for it mind...

Howdens have told me not to run the price by my fitter (even though it's on their account). I've been dealing with them direct on price and units.

We also used DIY Kitchens which came in cheaper than the Howdens quote and we are really pleased with the result. I preferred that I could see exactly how much each cabinet was costing, and could delete and add items in without having to get it requoted each time...the only bugbear for me is that there is no option on their website to have the prices displayed including VAT.

How long does it take to complete a DIY Kitchens order? Are they ready built like Howdens or flat pack?

I'm considering trying to pit a few Howdens against each other on price.

Hi Jessica, How much cheaper % wise was DIY Kitchens compared to Howdens and if you know how does it compare with Ikea, cost and quality wise?

I'm a fan of Ikea kitchens, installed three now at different houses. Never any problems with short delivery, damaged items, or installing by our own guys.

My next property will be a full refurb and I will put some pictures up when it's bought and we're underway.

I've already priced the kitchen 2.5 x 3.5mt at £3000using the online Ikea planner which is simple enough to use and provided=s detailed pricing.

They don't offer 'discount' prices, do have occassional offers and have interest free credit.

As mentioned 25yr guarantee on units but also 5 year on appliances.

There current range is all new this year, so maybe worth alook.

Hi Jessica, How much cheaper % wise was DIY Kitchens compared to Howdens and if you know how does it compare with Ikea, cost and quality wise?

sorry for the delay in replying! The Howdens quote was circa £4500 and we got the lot from DIY Kitchens for about £3200 including the sink, Duropal worktop and upstands. Our kitchen is 3m long x 2.8m wide and we have gone for a galley style. Think it was 12 or 13 units in total which included integrated fridge freezing housing, oven and microwave house, boiler cupboard, full height larder cupboard, two x 600m pan drawers etc. all with soft close.

My dad (nominated kitchen fitter :D) didn't want us to get an Ikea kitchen because of the lack of service void. And I didn't want to get one as I didn't want to have to build all the units! It all came pre assembled. We did have an issue with one of the doors, but it was all sorted fairly quickly and a new door was delivered. I will post a mid fit photo...
