The weak spot in all these home shredders is the plastic around the metal teeth, too easy to snap/burst open once a build up of paper gets stuck, and the reverse function tends to increase the chances of paper getting stuck inside
Yes, I think the plastic around the metal teeth has gone in mine. The motor is still working, but nothing moves. There is no paper jam, so it's time for a replacement.

I have had this for almost 3 years, it shreds up to 8x sheets at a time and also shreds Cd's and DVD's. Very reliable, cross-cut, big bin.
Does your Council Waste Collection take paper? I put all my shredded paper in a cardboard box (I save the ones I get) and compress it over time, mark the Box "Shredded Paper", seal it with sticky tape and chuck it in the bin.
Shredded paper goes in composting bin in my area.0 -
Recommend one of these http://www.tesco.com/direct/fellowes-p70cm-cross-cut-shredder-with-17-litre-mesh-bin/208-1732.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=208-1732
from one of the better names in shredder manufacture.
I've had one for some time now and find it's an easy to clean and use home shredder.
Looks just like my one. Yes, it has been good. Might get another like this.0 -
Love my Rexel Style Plus shredder:-

The slide out bin did it for me
Looks very elegant. Thanks.0 -
cogs may have gone astray, you could always take it apart and check, after unplugging obviously!!

In East Lyndsey, the DC have just given that up. We now have to put all paper and plastic into a Recycle bin. They have given up composting and will only take small green stuff (grass and small hedge cuttings) no kitchen waste as before. The Green collection is now fortnightly and costs £25 annually. I am 2.5 miles from the recycling dump, so have kept my £25 and take it myself.
Once our DC had the best recycling record in the country, now ist all gone.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I find it odd that there don't seem to be any standards for recycling.
My DC specifically say that we are not to put shredded paper in the recycle bin. I have no idea what makes shredded paper a problem. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Shredded paper in a mixed recycling system will be a nightmare for the sorting place.
Most of the cheaper ones(including branded) have the same interior mechanism made in china and this is disposable they do not even sell spare parts(cheap plastic cogs break) the only difference is the case and the bin.
keep your receipts and warranty info they just ship a new one if you have that.
Oil regularly is the key to long life and never let a staple through they cause minor damage to the cutters so they start to rip the paper.
Unless you want it next to your paper works system to just put stuff in it is relatively easy to make a massive bin and set the head into it if you have space somewhere and loads of stuff to do.0 -

We use a gerbil, it's pretty quick too! :rotfl::wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
