As the mum of a 7 month old I have to say I wouldn't want sentimental tat really either. We got lots of teddy style things but my son is only interested in an old pillowcase!!

As others have said it's so hard to make something sentimental for a baby that has not formed a personality yet and may/may not be into jewellery/keepsakes later down the line.

One of my favourite gifts for my little boy was a 'my first year' frame that my brother picked up in a random shop in Harrogate. You can buy them in high street stores but this is slightly different as it's handmade. It's been fab selecting a picture each month and filling it up. He's changed so much. He'll probably enjoy looking at it but I think it's more for me really!

What really meant something to me was having the help when my baby was born. It probably sounds crap to those who have never had a baby but it's the hardest job ever and even now, occasionally I'd love someone to offer their time over gifts. My partner and I never get a break for example and I'd have loved someone to save their cash and just offer to babysit once as I'm so tired! !!

Could always get a personalised wooden (or strong card) memory box (where all the tat other people have bought can go lol :p).

Some ideas on google images https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=memory+box+new+baby+personalised&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=itV5U4mKI8e1PeaogagE&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1190&bih=849 I bought a similar one once for my ex when we got married.

WMF do beautiful, excellent quality, hard wearing children's cutlery. You can buy a plain set like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/WMF-pce-kids-knuddel-years/dp/B00008XVRP/ref=sr_1_8?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1400494168&sr=1-8&keywords=wmf+children%27s+cutlery+set
and engrave a name or whatever, or just a nice set with some other design like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/WMF-Cutlery-Trains-Planes-pieces/dp/B00008XVRR/ref=sr_1_9?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1400493657&sr=1-9&keywords=wmf+children%27s+cutlery+set
They are not baby or toddler cutlery. My older son is 4 nearly 5 and only starting to use the knife and fork, although they have been able to use the spoon for a while already. It might be sentimental to the children when they are older as they will use it for years at an age that they will remember using it. When they grow out of using the cutlery the family can still use the small spoons as tea spoons. Small enough to hang onto, and even quite practical. I like using the fork, it is a perfect size for an adult eating a pudding :)

With your budget of up to £200, I think I would buy a keepsake with some and start a saving account with the rest that you can keep adding to

I love the coin sets from the Royal Mint. My husband buys a set every year and I think one from the year of your child's birth would be very meaningful

They look like they do lots of different sets now - I like the idea of a lucky silver penny! Very MSE!!! :money:

Perhaps you could consider an alternative gift, such as sponsor a safe birth, sponsor an emergency delivery or sponsor a midwifes training.

These come as certificates which could be kept and treasured. Starting from £15

For thousands of people this Christmas, their must-have gift is far more vital than the latest gadget or toy – it’s blood. Please don’t let the festivities and cold weather prevent you from giving them the ultimate gift… give blood.

I have to say I agree with the suggestion of getting something for baby when they are older. I honestly can't think of anything I wish my baby had got for £200 - it would be far more valulable to think he would have the money towards driving lessons at 17.
Some of the keepsake ideas are lovely though, and you could get something small but put the rest of the money aside in some way. I love the sound of the hand & foot printing, or has anyone suggested a voucher for a photo shoot?

Just been looking at virgin experiences and they've got a Bump to Birth photoshoot on offer for about a tenner. You get a photo free on each shoot, one before baby's born and one after.

    How crafty are you?

I've made cross stitch birth samplers for close family and friends and then presented them framed.

You can usually work on the border beforehand and then add the personalisation when the baby is born
