.....If you're off to NYC, you might want to consider flying to and from.... La Guardia.....

Doing a bit of research yourself and you'd find out that there are no direct non-stop flights from the UK to LGA.

OP didn't state they wanted direct flights - what is your point exactly?

My point is doing a bit of initial research yourself can add to your knowledge and become part of your holiday requirements.

lastimunte.com I'm sure used to have a "inspire me" section for general holidays, that did a similar thing. Put in type of holiday, general time period, budget and it would give a range of options.

Looking today, the inspire me section seems to only refer to gift ideas.

But that's for people with more money.... needs to be an "all of market" website to really work well. Lastminute deal with a subset of their clients only.

With this internet thing and google thing often the best place to start is not a website trying to sell you a holiday, but you doing a bit of research yourself.

So I think of flying non stop from EMA to NYC, check EMA's website, no flights, next convenient airport is BHX, check website, United has flights, bingo can go from there and look at options.
That could take 24/7 weeks to go through every option, every date, etc etc. It's an easy recursive algorithm for a website to go through.

And sometimes new options present themselves... e.g. you might see a list of airports in the subset that includes an airport near an old friend you'd forgotten about - and that makes you think you could go up the night before and visit them as part of your master plan...... so you don't know where you might fly from, only where you won't.... if that makes sense.

it's also an easy recursive process for the human brain... being spoon-fed by technology rarely results in the most rewarding experience.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • https://www.skyscanner.net , find the cheapest flights using the whole month option, provides a nice graph to tell you when's cheapest, then once you've chosen dates, look on https://www.trivago.com for a hotel. Not rocket science.

Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

It's not how I start my holiday planning. I generally see a crazy sale/error fare posted on Holiday Pirates and work around that. But then it helps that I want to go more or less everywhere - not so good if you're desperate to get to Miami in the first week of July etc.

I've never actually been abroad... but it's nice to sit and press buttons to show what could've been possible.... those "on a whim" moments .. and you never know you might spot a 2 day break leaving tomorrow for £40 if there were one simple site that had everything on it.....
