Am I right or wrong? Ebay problems

Options
Last week I advertised a Wii bundle for sale on ebay. It is bulky and so I said it was pick up only.

A person won the bidding for £57.79 and then emailed me to say that could he pay by PayPal and have a courier pick it up?

I emailed him back to say yes to PayPal but no for a courier as I could only be home evenings and weekends.

Heard nothing for a couple of days so then I emailed again and asked him if we could organise for him to come and pick up the wii.

He emailed a day later to say that he had transferred the money and what day could the courier pick it up?

I emailed him back and said that I was only available evenings and weekends so again, no to a courier.

The next day he emailed back and said the courier could only come 9-5 weekdays.

Now I am getting fed up so I email him back and say sorry, you knew there was no possibility for a courier I will refund your money less the amount that PayPal have taken for their cut.

No delay in replying to this one - as within the hour he writes saying if I just press the refund button he would get the full refund and PayPal will refund me their charge.

When I look into this, it seems that PayPal will refund most of their charge back but there is a fixed amount of (about 20p) which I won’t get back.

So I write and tell him this and inform him that I have refunded most of the money but have kept a bit to cover this charge and the time I have wasted on this transaction. (ie the 79p). What with relisting, emailing this guy and having to organise for someone else to pick up the wii - I estimate a good three hours wasted on this.

He immediately emails me with ‘where did I hear about a fixed charge?’

Me - From Paypal

Him - This is not right. Nowhere on PayPal does it say this - please refund me the rest.

So I have emailed him where to find the info on the PayPal website.

I haven’t heard back from him yet.

My question is - does anyone think that I am right to keep the 79p? Or not? I know 79p isn't going to go far, but I feel like it is the principle of the thing. He knew I couldn't use a courier but he tried it on anyway.

If I refund him, he will then feel that it is ok to bid on any item even if the conditions of the sale don't suit him.

You've probably got off lightly anyway - just refund him his whole amount.

Do you realise what COULD have happened had you agreed and sent the bundle by the customer's courier? You would have had NO proof of delivery (such that would satisfy paypal) and the customer could have later initiated a chargeback for non-delivery.

Is 79p worth negative feedback on your ebay account?

No matter how he collected - courier or in person - he could have then had this item for free, by claiming none receipt.

Regarding the 20p - your wrong and he can still open a claim for the rest - damaging your account.

Today i dropped 20p and couldnt be bothered picking it up. If i had known ebay battles were started over 20p - i would have picked it up and offered it you.

As for the 59p interest - Wonga has nothing on you!

If it were me I would have thought the same but would have decided that it would be best to refund the whole just to keep the buyer happy and prevent neg feedback.

Otterlie, I am with you on this one but unfortunately you do need to refund the whole lot. Ebay can really sting the seller. You can blacklist the buyer though.

Techspec - "Today i dropped 20p and couldnt be bothered picking it up" Unless you have a serious back problem you are an idiot and arrogant. You are also on the wrong website.

Ok thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. I will refund this annoying person.

Will be a while before I use ebay again though. Everything was great until they forced sellers to offer PayPal. Hate that I have no choice in this.

    Moving on now! x
