So it would not cost much to modify that system to generate an email so that the passenger would be aware of the problem when he still had time to do something about it.

Even if that's true, I don't really see why they should have to, though...and if I was the airline, I wouldn't want to take on additional responsibility that isn't mine to begin with....just opens a whole new stream of potential for complaints/demands for compensation because an email went astray, etc...for something that's the passenger's responsibility in the first place.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

It is clear that the airline had a system that detected automatically that the travel documents presented were not valid for the destination in question, and alerted gate staff that he should not be allowed to board. So it would not cost much to modify that system to generate an email so that the passenger would be aware of the problem when he still had time to do something about it. The way to achieve this would be to campaign for a change in the law: at the moment the law, as well as airline T and Cs, are very clear.

    Where is it clear?
It reads to me that it was the gate staff who picked it up when he presented his passport.

As above, do we really need to take away all responsibilities from us mere mortals

... i attempted to check my bag into the luggage hold. Upon inspecting my passport, the attendant behind the desk...

It was at check-in. They might have got away with it if they had no luggage to check-in.
