EasyJet Won't Refund my Flight Costs

Hi guys,

Looking for a bit of advice on something that's never happened to me before. Not sure whether it's worth pursuing or not. Some suggestions & direction would be appreciated!

So I was due to flight out to Iceland on the 8th May for 3 Nights for a friend's stag do.

I had booked my tickets online with Easy Jet & also checked in online as well as printed off my boarding pass. I made sure i had everything prepared & left nothing to chance.

When we arrived at the airport, i attempted to check my bag into the luggage hold. Upon inspecting my passport, the attendant behind the desk told me that I would not be able to travel to Iceland as Iceland immigration require that all passports must be valid for 3 months from date of return (my passport is due to expire on the 26th July 2014)!

There was no flexibility or leeway on the part of Easy Jet. I was basically told "Tough, you're not getting on board, so thanks for coming anyway!" I was point blank refused a refund on the cost of my flight.

Now i admit, i should have checked Iceland's immigration laws prior to arriving at the airport, but i have never come across this law (and i was told that many people had been refused travel for the same reasons!)

I am currently fighting Easy Jet for the immediate refund of my flight costs. My argument is that as their online system at the airport managed to flag up that my passport did not meet 'the visa requirements', so why did their website not do the same thing when I entered my details? Why was there not even a single line of message asking me to check Iceland's immigration laws?

Do i have a leg to stand on or should i just learn my lesson & walk away?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Kind Regards
Az

It' always the passengers responsibility to ensure they have the appropriate travel documentations. If EJ are correct about the rule being in place I don't see that you have any grounds for a refund.

There it is, in black and white

OP, it was your responsibility to check entry requirements, you're piddling in the wind if you think you'll get anywhere with EJ.

Let me clarify... I am not doubting Iceland's immigration requirements. I'm sure they are quite valid and my complaint isn't with the law.

My argument is that EasyJet's online system should have done more to make passengers aware of this requirement. (i.e. the baggage self-service machine was quick to highlight that my passport was invalid when i scanned my Boarding Pass, so why doesn't their website do the same thing?)

Sorry I disagree. EJ have a booking system that suits 99.9% of customers. All foreign travellers have a duty to look and search for entry requirements of the countries they visit themselves.

Why should you get a refund over say someone who booked a ticket and just changed their mind?

You might want to check if you have any kind of cover under your travel insurance - I doubt it but try there.

    from the EasyJet Ts&Cs

As others have said, it's a poor argument as it isn't EJ's responsibility to comply, it's yours.

They are not taking the passport details for their own use, It is a regulation that needs to be fulfilled.

Sorry OP, but it is up to you to check before flying, no one elses

Your failure stopped them selling that seat to somebody else.

So why should they refund you?
