Saving Water - Tips

We are having a water meter fitted - not by choice, it's happening city wide - and while I don't think we are particularly wasteful with our water, I was wondering how other people reduce their water usage/save water etc........a friend says she fills the kettle with the first water from the hot tap, rather than letting it run until the hot comes through........any other suggestions please??????
We are a family of five. With living costs going up and up, I'm really hoping that our water bills don't go up too!!
Thanks in advance.....over to you lovely OS folks!0 -

What do your water company charge per cubic meter, if I can be nosey? Just flabberghasted at the bill being so low and wondering how I could equal it.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well I don't have a water meter but I do have a 240l water butt. I 'fill' it from a gutter from my shed roof which is say 6' x 8'.
I use that water for watering in the garden, washing off the trowel when I have been 'tidying' the garden (we have 2 cats so you can work out what I have tidied) and washing out my wheelie bins - a few gallons of rainwater and a good jiggle cleans them clean enough;) and washing out the buckets when I have cleaned the car - in other words, anything that doesn't have to be 'clean'.
I also save water used for prepping vegetables and washing before cooking for watering the garden.
Make sure no-one leaves the tap running when teeth cleaning. Don't flush the loo everytime. If you were REALLY keen on water saving rainwater is perfectly good enough for loo flushing but a faff.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I have a plastic bowl in my sink for washing up, it saves a couple of liters or so each time I wash up or soak something. If I am washing veggies, I wash them over the bowl and then use the water for plants either indoors or out.
I too have a large water butt for outdoor plants.
I use a bucket of water to wash the car, then use the watering can to rinse the suds off.
We shower everyday, but just be sensible about how long you are in there for. We don't bathe so save a lot of water from that.
Water from the dogs bowl gets put over the plants too when it needs refreshing, and I wash the dog bowls in the same water as our dishes once they are all done.
I also don't flush every time if its a number one.0 -
Turn the taps off while brushing your teeth, double use water from veg washing etc for garden, don't wash up until you've got a sink full so if you've only used a couple of plates and glasses for lunch leave til dinner washing up. We shower most days but when it's bath night we share water, I get in first then when the water cools both kids come in with me then after OH lets half the water out and tops up with hot - we're clean from regularshowerin so bath is just for relaxing so might as well share! lol. We're a family of 4 (2 under 3s so they create lots of washing plus DD has mobility issues so has more accidents and therefore clothing changes than a n other toddler) in a 3 bed house with a veg garden and we're paying £23 a month without being too tight with water.0
