Focus have space saving butts for £29.99 but our down pipe is n the heighbours garden. It would have bene great to have a butt in the garden as our outside tap/kitchen is at the front.Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0

Not water-butt related, but when running the hot tap, our boiler tends to sulk a bit, even with the right amount running through, so I've taken to sticking a 4pt milk bottle under the tap while it sorts itself out. Beats having 6-8pts go down the plughole before I can start washing up, and the water goes onto the mini-Kew on my bedroom windowsill0

We are on a water meter too and save as much water as we can, we have two barrels on the garage roof to collect rain water. When we have a shower I put the plug in the bath and then empty the water out by scooping it up in a jug and pouring it into a bucket, the last drops can be sucked up with a car sponge which holds far more water than an ordinary one. We use this and washing up water to water the garden..... but not the containers or the grow bags, we use rain water for those....... we have managed to keep the garden looking ok like this through the hot weather we have had.
The allotment is different we have water there and you are allowed to use a hose to water with, so we go up once a week after supper and water verything well, I remember Alan Titchmarsh saying water the roots not the leaves, so make sure that all the water goes into the roots......... so far everyting up there is doing fine too. We will have to watch the tomatos once the flowers set too little water can cause blossom end rot...... which ruins them.

Hi guys,
Just wondering if you had any tips on how we can save water and money on the washing up? Only two of us. Thanks.x:j This year is my year 2009 :j0 -
Get a washing up bowl that's smaller than your sink!
Also you need far less washing-up liquid than you'd think. Don't use the bubbles to judge how much you need - the bubbles are purely cosmetic.
Get some reusable cloths rather than using disposable ones or those sponge thingies.
If you use brillo pads cut them in half and keep them in the freezer once they're 'started' to stop them from going rusty.0 -
See how much washing up you've got to do before filling the bowl up to the top eg at breakfast time a half full bowl does me fine. Wash up as soon as poss so things don't get dried on then you're not having to soak them in extra water. Rinse off bubbles if needed with cold not hot water. The other thing I do when waiting for the hot water to come through..I collect the other water in a jug and then use it to flush the toilet. Can you tell I'm on a meter?:D

I'll add this to the existing thread on saving water

I've also posted on Utilities but as we're thinking of having a water meter installed I'm sure a few people on the Old Style thread will be able to come up with some innovative ideas on how we can save water and reduce our water bill.0
