Hi. I save water by having a bucket in the bathroom. You know when you run your shower and the water is cold at first? Instead of letting that clean water that I've paid for run down the drain I collect it in my bucket. Next time I flush the loo I pour the contents of my bucket in to the cistern to help fill it back up.

I do this for the shower and when I'm running the hot water tap for washing up/baths and other stuff. It's saved me about £10 on my water bill.

The best way to save loads on water bills is to wash (yourself and your clothes) less often. Unless you work in a heavy manual job, you don;t need to change your outer clothes daily.

I also understand that some people change their bedding and towles daily - that's not necessary either, for the vast majority of us :D

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to keep ideas together.

    Hello all

To add my water saving habits to the ops list - we:

    1. Use harvested rain water to flush the loo - just keep a watering can at the side of the loo with rain water in it, and pour it in to the toilet bowl until the bowl is clean.

    2. Save water which comes out of shower while its warming up to flush the loo

    3. Use old washing up water ( use ecover washup liquid) to water patio plants ( NB no good for plants growing food you will later eat - but good enough for the flowers)

We have a water meter - and are down £50 per quarter on bills since doing this

    BW all

    Hello

Wow my second thread start of the day,i am on a roll!! :rotfl:

I'm looking for tips on how to get my monthly water DD down. Im sure there are threads on this but i've not had any luck in my search...i bet the first answer will be a direct link :o sorrryyy im new to this!

At the moment its £40.10 a month and has been for the last year but thats alot! There are 2 of us,me and my 4yr old. I'd love to get a water meter fitted but i rent and the landlord has refused!
I'm not wasteful at all, here are some of the things i do:

*I shower everyday but i have a shower over the bath so my daughter joins me for her bath.
*I turn taps off between soaping hands and rinsing.
*I fill a cup with water for brushing teeth instead of leaving the tap running.
*I use a steamer for veggies.
*I let my washing build up so i do 3 large loads (including bed sheets and towels a week) instead of 6 small ones like some of my friends...this may go down in sept as daughter starts school and therefore will have uniform instead of play clothes for nursery each day.
*I boil a full kettle in the morning and fill a thermal flask.
*I did have a water butt but it cracked during the snow so i am having to use taps to water at the mo but will replace asap!
*I fill 2L coke botttles with water and keep in fridge for drinks

There maybe more if i really think but im sure you guys can give me some pointers too??....pleeease!!

If you're not on a meter then you billed by the rateable value of the property. You could use 1000 litres a day or 10, you'll pay the same amount.

Maybe not the first answer, but there's this thread :) As this isn't an Old Style thread, I'll move and merge it into that thread later.
