So what are the tall columns holding the steel portions made of?

Trying to be clever could make you look as stupid as "Googling melb".

Here's a few more examples of a boundary fence constructed out of brick and steel without the brick base section, just to help you understand:

I would say the bricks have nothing to do with it. The fence is the metal part, which simply sits between brick columns.

I may be wrong, but I wouldn't class the columns as part of the fence. The fence is the bit between the columns.

Fence panels are in short supply, as the man, who replaced those between us and our neighbour explained.

Have you had a word with the rescue, as they may agree to your taking the dog on the promise to only let him out on a long lead until the fence is fixed,( especially if he could only escape to next door and would be unable to access a road ) ?

    How do you figure that?

I made a comment that a fence can be constructed out of many materials, not just wooden fencing panels and had an annoying idiot like "Google melb" think he/she was being clever by saying bricks could only build a wall (completely off topic, as the OP could even build a plain brick wall if they wanted to, and it would have solved their predicament).

It is still a valid point, the OP could build a fence out of wooden planks, wooden or steel poles, bricks, steel bars, steel panels, concrete or wire mesh (or any other material that can be arranged into a barrier).

Let's forget the idiotic trolling comment of "Google melb" and perhaps realise that the my comment is quite relevant.

OP wants a dog, OP needs a fence, then the OP needs to build a fence out of whatever materials they can buy if fencing panels can't be sourced.

Just wanted to add that if you do put up a temporary wire fence, if the fence that's fallen down is your neighbours, you can't attach the wire fence to any posts without their consent.....

still waiting for my neighbour to fix theirs, 4 panels went but the posts snapped off at ground level as well, so not a cheap job I'd imagine

You can understand the rescue being cautious tho

Really? Wow! So you would call this a wall?

And this is also a wall?

Perhaps your use of Google is a little lacking ;).

<puzzled smilie> Actually, I would also call those walls "walls"...because that is what they are. They are walls with integral railings.

There are many such houses round here, with short walls, with railings on top and its never occurred to me to refer to them as anything other than "walls".

How big is the dog? Could you get away with some fence pins and plastic fencing until your neighbour fixes the fence?

Its taken me about 6 weeks to get my fence redone after the storms

Unfortunately I'm another having problems getting panels...and annoyingly the retaining wall and the fence on two sides is being replaced at the minute. I've been told 6 weeks too, leaving us completely exposed (we have an alley along these boundaries). Sigh.
