I ordered goods from USA and paid £22. The Royal Mail demanded £12 before letting me have the parcel (£4 customs and £8 Royal Mail fee). I refused to pay this excessive charge, so they claimed they returned the item to sender. But the sender never received it and although I went through the whole complaints procedure, Royal Mail refused to reimburse me or help locate the parcel. This seems to absolve Royal Mail of any responsibility to return the item to sender. They could just throw the item in the bin or keep it themselves.

Shocking treatment OP. I spoke to my friend and he says Royal Mail are wrong, and should send your some meatballs and a free night in a (non slip) Premier Inn as an apology. I know he's right because he owns a conservatory company, he's got shops and everything.

    Hope that helps :)

This was their first post, they have not been back and they will possibly never return to MSE again

The op hasn't even seen the replies so how can you assume that's the reason they have not come back?

The op's account says Last Activity: 10-05-2014 4:34 PM.

So that was it, one post and hasn't bothered to come back regardless which quite often happens with these one post wonders.

I don't think the kind of replies you often get on here are at all helpful. Tell the person if you don't think they have a case, yes, but why be nasty about it? All this does is put off new users from posting. I don't think the OP has come back, and probably they never will now. MSE is not supposed to be some kind of private club.

And to be honest, this kind of pointscoring is not what moneysavingexpert is for, and is fairly pointless. The impression is left that some of you get some kind of kick out of it - strange.

I can't actually see anywhere in the original post where a question has been raised as to his consumer rights regarding this issue. It is a pure vent, posted in the wrong section. Others have responded accordingly, with the consensus being that the OP had acted hastily by refusing to pay the charges and that any loss is his own fault for not being aware of the charges which result from overseas purchases. The tone would most likely have been totally different had a question been asked as opposed to a reaction to a vent.

I also haven't seen you offering any constructive advice to the OP - just your own personal vent.

I can imagine the vast majority of people like I do don't bother to log out so are therefore always logged in if they visit the forum.

Just because you do something it doesn't mean that everybody else does the same, particularly a newbie.
You were wrong, it happens, no need to find excuses ;)

I would say that you shouldn't blame RM or the retailer because it was your mistake not to find out about charges but if you didn't get the goods you are entitled to a refund. If you paid by Paypal you can easily get your money back, otherwise it might be a bit tricky to enforce this with a USA company.
I don't think you'll get anywhere with RM, partly because the goods belong to the retailer not yourself.
You could try making some noise on social networking sites, FB etc, some companies respond to complaints on their page, or you could make a formal complaint, as sometimes in large companies the person/team dealing with complaints is not the same dealing with an initial inquiry.
However I do agree that RM charge is excessive, like a tax on personal imports, a small fee would be understandable, but what is charged by RM (and courier companies can charge even more) takes the mickey.

    That's an assumption, we don't know ;)

Most of the ' Newbies' lately, come on here with a very large Chip on the shoulders, stating regs that do not exist, or trying to bend the regs to suit their own case.

A number of us, try to point them in the right direction, but if they don't accept it, or start being sarky, then as far as I am concerned, it is Open season.
Given that the OP hasn't actually responded to any of the posts what's your excuse this time.
