Fibre optic + phone package

I'm on a slow but reasonably priced Talk Talk package at the mo, out of contract, and would like to upgrade. Some comparison sites show that we can get fibre optic so this is a priority if I can get it. My son streams, play games and downloads quite a bit, so an unlimited limit without traffic management makes sense.

Can anyone give me a steer on what speeds and Mbps should I be looking for?

My current phone package includes free international calls but I've started using skype so will knock that on the head too, although would like free evening and weekend calls (if not too pricey).

There's nothing to touch Virgin on speed and their TV doesn't rely on freeview through an aerial, which where i live can be erratic.

However, i find their telephony and add-ons expensive.

I was looking at TalkTalk myself as their bottom end deals look good value and my contract with VM is up soon-i dont really need high speed and fibre.

Thanks - will go as high as I can afford I think, as I tend not to switch very often!

Anything around 10-20 mbps is fine for a single user, don't waste your money on high speed services unless you have 3+ heavy users at home.
What speeds do you get with Talk Talk btw?

Well there are two of us here and I'd say my son (22yo) was a heavy user, whereas I just use it for MSE, facebook, etc.

I've run the speedtest from Broadband choices and it comes out at a pawltry 2.1mb download speed and upload at 635 kb. I've had Talk Talk check it before and they've said there is nothing wrong with the service! My son has stopped using wifi and has a cable trailing down the stairs so he can go directly into the point downstairs. Another reason I need to get this sorted!

The speed from the ISP is not the speed you may get over WiFi as that is dependant upon many factors outside of the ISP service .
Its possible that internal wiring is what is slowing your network .

How can I find the speed from my ISP? I've looked on my Talk Talk account and it doesn't give this.

You log on to your router and look for its line statistics.
To find out how Google your routers make and !model along with line statistic's in the search.

If you don't understand them post them, your lad should know how anyway.
PS Is the router plugged in to your mater skt

Yes to the last question. I'll see if I can find the line statistics or get my son to do this as he's the one complaining most! Thanks for your help.

TalkTalk have a speed checker on your account, look under Support & Tools, Speed Checker or use http://www.speedtest.net/ or similar.

Note their fibre product speeds are:

38Mbit/s down / 2Mbit/s up, medium
76Mbit/s down / 19Mbit/s up, large

All are theoretical maximums.

So while the first might be fast enough down, the upload might or might not be an issue for you.
