It's a good thing for some manufacturers of desperately tedious, dated, middle-of-the road white goods that some buyers, as a leading criteria, think of how reliable their second major purchase is going to be.0

Having had a terribly unreliable car which regularly left me stranded, reliability is a major factor. Not that its the only factor - I also want to have some fun. Fortunately there are some great cars which combine both.0 -
When I do have a job that needs a regular, boring 130-300 mile daily commute,I get a Vectra/Mondeo 1.8 petrol donkey to do the job, not invest serious money on a workhorse. None of which need more than a £1k investment and are throwaways.0

Maybe the JD Power 2013 survey gives better overall results at least it is based on customer feedback.

J.D.Power survey refers to customer satisfaction which will cover reliability but also cost, performance, comfort, appearance etc. whereas OP was asking about reliability alone.0 -

There is no way that you can be sure of absolute reliability, whatever the make or model.
As the saying goes "****" happens.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -

You can improve the odds considerably though.
I'm disappointed my Toyota Landcruiser has needed a repair (to the air conditioning) after only seven years.
My neighbour's car (same age, but won't mention the make as I'm not looking to point score) has come back on a flatbed at least twice in that time.0 -
Agreed.
