Which make of cars is more reliable?

Hi Folks

I am thinking of buying a new car, and the other day I was looking at some of the well known makes such as Audi. I then went on to look at some of the less well known makes such as Kia. As you know, the price difference is quite large.

Is that because Audi (for example) is a well known and respected name rather than (say) Kia? Or are the more well known makes generally more reliable?

Thank You.

Kia/Hyundai is the fourth largest car maker in the world and has a well deserved reputation for reliability, as evidenced by their seven year warranty. One of the reasons that they are low priced is the much lower wages paid to Koreans than to Germans.

But of course Audis are built to a very high standard, and this too is reflected in the price.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • You're comparing apples and pears, Audi is a perceived high image brand and commands a large price premium over Kia, which was a cheap and cheerful Korean brand now being re-aligned much like Skoda, which is more of a direct competitor than Audi.

Respect, depends on what you want and expect from a car and its maker, for whats its worth i respect Toyota for their honesty customer service and standing by their product.

Reliability, well one of the two makes you ask about offers 3 years warranty, the other 7 years, make your own conclusions about which maker reckons to make the most reliable and durable product.

In general the Japanese/Korean manufacturers make more reliable cars. Why? Because they concentrate on design of parts despite them being mundane - Asian manufacturers are always being slated by European car magazines for their interiors and switches. Yet Audi can make a lower quality product because the perceived quality is better.

Do a search for VAG 2.0 diesel oil pump failures 2003 to 2009 approx, bills of upto £3000 which VAG wont acknowledge there is an issue. Similarity recent 1.4 turbo petrol engines are have issues. VAG does not necessarily equal reliable.

Audi are pitching at a different type of customer and have built themselves up to be seen as a "premium" brand.

Kia on the other hand are aiming at the mainstream market, pitching their cars at a little bit below focus prices but with a longer warranty and better spec.

I've had Renault, BMW, Vauxhall and Ford cars but swear by Mazdas. My OH used to own a garage business and never understood my preference until he bought my current Mazda as a present for me. He's shocked by the relatively light fuel consumption for a big car, and by the reliability compared to his Honda Civic. My car's over 10yrs old but every component still works perfectly, and it's the second one I've had, so I was already aware how good their fuel consumption is.
  • I have a 2013 Kia Proceed its a basic trim model, switches feel sturdy, quality inside feels good, sound system quality is good (first car where I have not needed to rip out the stereo and speaker and fit my own I have OCD when it comes to audio quality flat tones and tinny bass irritates the hell out of me), the dash is 25% plastic the rest is soft touch sponge, steering wheel is fitted neatly and controls almost everything besides power windows. 1.6diesel 126BHP petrol 1.6 non turbo 130BHP 1.6 petrol GT proceed 201BHP. there are 3 levels of trim and wheels to choose from with increase in prices, the trim levels are almost identical to the ceed 5dr hatch with a few exception on sports pedals and alloy wheel styles, you can also choose paddle clutch on the 1.6 GT.
to get the same trim levels with audi youll have to have deep pockets.

like previously said your comparing apples to pears though.

I've never had a so-called premium make of car. But I can say that I have never had an unreliable car either. I've had Triumph Herald, Morris(2), Fiats(4) ,Vauxhalls(2), Sunbeam Talbot,Citroens(3),.
My present car is a Kia Cee'd diesel and I am well pleased with it., 47mpg around town and well over 53mpg on a run, very well equipped.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
