Hi, ive got a non smart phone PAYG, wanting to buy a smartphone, I realise that if you use the internet out of wif fi range it costs, even £1 a day if you dont actually use the network for data. Is this correct? presumably you can switch off the part that connects it to the network & then switch it on in an emergency. how much internet would I get for the £1, roughly. Thanks. I dont really want a "Contract" PAYG.

best option is probably a three 321 payg sim.

Yes, you can turn the data off.

giffgaff (http://giffgaff.com/) would be worth looking at. Don't worry about using data, you just get a sim with data included. So, no, it won't cost a £1 a day.
If you are going to turn the data off, there is not much point in having a smart phone to be honest..

You don't have to make a monthly payment with either of the PAYGs mentioned.

    GiffGaff PAYG.
Data is turned off unless required therefore daily cost nil .
Data use cost up to 20 MB costs 20p every MB more costs 20p .

Giffgaff is not a £10 a month as you say if you buy a standard PAYG sim .
Top up as and when required .I go months without using mobile data as i have no need to be connected to facebook for eternity .

Indeed, I've not topped up since 2010.

You need to ask your current provider how much data costs or if the offer some bundle package.

As they all have different pricing structures no one on here can tell you how much it'll cost as you haven't told us who your with.

Personally for very light use T-Mobile is pretty decent, a one off charge of £20 will get you 6 months internet with a low fair use (200-500mb month) but its enough for light use.
