A bit of advice with Negear copatibility for Ubuntu:

I find it absolutly impossible to get wireless adapters to work on my laptop via USB. Currently I have the Netgear W111GT.

That's exactly what stopped me playing around with Ubuntu and why I'd never use it (until something changes) on my main system. My old spare pc has Netgear WG111 and it took me hours and very steep learning curve just to get it working at all. Then it still freezes the pc completely if it tries to download anything substantial, such as the synaptic update packages. It's not much use to me if I can't get even a basic internet use out of it (through wireless network).

  • I've decided to stick with bits of wire as I have no real use for a laptop so I can't really personally comment about the Wireless issue. It has to be said though that the Ubuntu forums are littered with people having "issues" with wireless ! However, on another forum that I visit one of the guys reckons that the latest Ubuntu, "Fiesty Fawn", is much better on the wireless issue than previous versions.

Ubuntu/ linux will always have issues until manufacturers start developing software and drivers for it properly and the Ubuntu/ Linux developers find a better way of installing software/ drivers. If Ubuntu etc were more user friendly, had a more intuitive interface and didn't rely on command line instructions on a regular basis there would be a higher take up. I'm struggling to access a printer across my network, my scanner doesn't want to work even though Ubuntu sees it and don't get me started on syncing my smartphone.
Having said that I still use it for basic stuff and I keep looking around for solutions as it's a good O/s at it's base level, just needs more time.

As above, in my version Nero 6 there won't be anything specifically mentioning "iso", when selecting what to burn it should be something like "previously saved project or disc image" that you select and then choose the .iso file.

    Same for Version 7.

Assuming you are running Nero and not Nero Express......

Once Nero starts up, click on OPEN (not one of the options on the left)
The filetypes selection box has a drop down where you can choose All supported compilations and images or you can select Image files, *.nrg *.iso *.cue

Ubuntu has moved on & I am getting along fine with it. It loads up all the wireless adapters i have with no problems ( 11b & 54g). The whole computer works on an install, network cards, sound, everything.

I am however struggling with networking on our mshome network.

One of the linux pc's has no problem. you can see all the items on the network & the other pc's including the xp pc can acsess the shared resourses on it. The other pc with the same linux installation can acsess all the resourses on the network & the other linux box can acsess it but I can not get the xp pc in there without a user/pass request that I have no idea how to get round. My username & pass doesn't work & I never had the issue setting up the 1st linux box.

I may have missed something I did on the 1st install but I have since tried 3 other distros & gone back to ubuntu again & still it does not work.
    :p

Sounds like you just need to tweak Samba. Oooh, or actually it may be a simple case of permissions on the folder you're trying to share. Although if one pc can access it, then that may not be the case. Check your samba conf file, I'll maybe post mine when I get home.

Just to clarify, the XP pc, can't get on one of your Linux boxes without being asked for a username or password?

    I posted about Samba here:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=483625&highlight=smb.conf

And with regards to permissions, look up the "chmod" command.
You'll want open up a terminal window and type something along the lines of:
    sudo chmod -R ao+rw /pathTo/FolderIWantToShare

-R is recursive, so it applies to permissions to subfolders.
"a" and "o" are the types of users
"+rw" is add (ie +) read and write permissions

If you look on Wikipedia there is a page about chmod. Post back if you have problems.
