For those who haven't heard of Ubuntu, it's a Free Linux distribution designed to replace expensive, slow, legacy operating systems like Microsoft Windows XP/Vista on your computer.
For those who haven't seen it you can see what it looks like here:

I have been using it for the past 2 and a half years now, and I would never go back to Windows. I also haven't upgraded my computer in SEVEN years, and it still runs like a dream now that I don't use Windows any more.

I don't think you gain points for using hyperbole on this board."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I'm an Ubuntu user, but must say XP is often faster.
A fresh, neatly installed XP will boot faster than Ubuntu, and often be fractionally more responsive in opening up windows and applications. Ubuntu is without a doubt much faster at shutting down though.
One benefit of Ubuntu is that it's free, although Windows ships with the majority of pc's purchased these days, so that kind of cancels it out.
I like using Linux because it's open source and well managed. I like synaptic and the way packages are installed and updated. I also prefer the way permissions and users are handled. Oh and not having to worry about spyware or viruses, and that it takes a lot longer for performance to deteriorate compared with Windows."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

You can download it for free if you don't want to wait ages for the cd0

I quite enjoyed playing with it for a while. Easy to get to grips with but as for using it as my main OS! I think I will stick with windoze

I switched about a year ago. There are a few things I miss (especially when I initially switched), but there are a lot of things I prefer compared to Windows.
- No virii or spyware (at current). Just makes for a nicer user experience.
- Better managed updated across all apps installed (if you've used synaptic).
- Better handling of permissions and security.
- EXT3 file system, it fragments less than NTFS.
I do find XP to be slightly faster, although it deteriorates in performance much more quickly. Both XP and Ubuntu are about as stable as one another.
The most important thing was to be able to do everything in Ubuntu that I could in XP. It took me a little while, but I've now got everything setup. I currently work as a .Net developer so run XP in a virtual machine within Ubuntu in order to do any Visual Studio etc... work."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Hi, I've been reading all this about "ubuntu" and thought I'd download it and give it a go.
I now have a disc but all I get is a page full of odd looking files...nothing like fjeer's screenshot.
I can't seem to get instructions or help, is there something else I should do? Sorry for being a bit slow with computer things!

Hi DK
When you made your CD, did you burn it as an iso image?Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0
