Im planning a trip somewhere warm in January for a week, looking at somewhere special, my favourite option at the moment is the Maldives but would maybe like a shorter flight. Any suggestions?

    The Canaries.
Everywhere else warm requires a long-haul flight in January.

The OP has got a week, which = 7 nights.

At least 2 nights (or 3 days) will be spent travelling,

That leaves 5 nights to enjoy a longhaul holiday in a very hot and humid country before the return flight. That doesn't leave much time to venture too far from Bangkok, and long and tiring day tours to places like Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi are exhausting especially at the hottest time of the year.

December and January are both peak holiday times in Bangkok (and the whole of SE Asia). So everywhere will be extremely busy, and particularly so in Bangkok where the Skytrain, Underground, and public ferries will all the chokker-block. The roads are always manic.

Not much of a holiday in my book.

Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere longhaul in January if I only had a week. Time to go home just as you're beginning to enjoy the break.

I take your point and I'd rather have extra nights (such as the 8 nights we had in Bangkok). OP is willing to go to Maldives for a week though. I wasn't thinking it cut them down to 5 days though, more that on the way there they'd lose a day and add it on (ie be away for 8 days like you are when you take a one week holiday in the US). Good flight times work out similar to West Coast USA flights. Some folk happily do Vegas for 4 nights. That said, I wouldn't do it personally.
  • Cape Verde Islands is a good winter destination and is not much further than the Canaries. Six hours flying time or so. Almost guaranteed sun and temperatures in the high twenties. Charter flights goes to Sal and Boa Vista.

Kenya is a couple of hours closer than The Maldives, if you fancy a 3 day Safari and a few days on a beach.
  • I've a plan to go for israel and petra tour in the coming January. Tel aviv , Masada & the Dead sea, Jerusalem, Jordan River , Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, upper Galilee, Golan heights, Zefad, Nazareth, Akko Carmel, Caesaria, Eilat By the Red Sea, Petra Jordan, Tel aviv airport are the places I'm going to visit. I got this info here.

I think the OP may want to scratch Kenya from their list.
