not sure how long the Maldives flight is, but we flew to jamaica on a 767 it took us over 10hrs outbound, maybe the dreamliners will cut the flight times,
plenty of people we spoke to in our hotel did travel for one week, just seems a lot of travelling to me for one weeks holiday

I've done the Caribbean, Hong Kong and Bali for a single week (not all at once:rotfl:) at that time of the year but if you can only take one week's leave (like teachers or parents with school age children for example) then it's a case of either going for a week or not going at all.

Exactly. Teachers choose their profession like the rest of us, and parents will reap the benefits of being child-free soon enough (just like the 'old school' had to wait!).

And now for something completely different: fly to Dallas or Houston, then do a road trip to Big Bend National Park.

I'm only suggesting an idea and I realise it's an unusual choice, so if it doesn't appeal then please just ignore it.

A colleague went to Houston in February, it was as cold as the UK.

FWIW here are the climate figures for Panther Junction in the park but of course averages are only averages http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/weather_averages.htm
Average max in Jan is 60.9F.

Would you go all that way from Yarkshire for a week, especially without offering the OP an itinerary to follow? Bangkok is a gateway, and not somewhere to loiter for more than 3 nights.

I recommend Lindisfarne, more time on the ground.

Yes, I would go all that way from Yorkshire for a week. We were in Bangkok for 8 nights, I know other folk who go there for longer than 3 nights and there is lots to do there. My suggestion was Thailand though, not Bangkok specifically. Depends what they like, but if they are looking at the Maldives they might want a beach. I can't particularly advise on beaches in Thailand hence leaving it at that.

Why the need for criticism? You're not offering any help yourself.

everyone to their own i wasnt criticizing or passing judement on people travelling long hall just giving my own personal experience/opinion.
i also live in yorkshire. depending on destination, most(not all) long haul destinations i looked up either fly from Manchester Gatwick or Heathrow.
travel to airports/flights/transfers, time differences leaves me knackered and ready for another holiday when i return lol

Thank you for all your replies and comments! Ideally I would love to go to the Maldives, done a few strict itinerary holidays over the last 18 months so looking for a chance to relax in a beautiful location but didn't want to ignore other options. I have done Hong kong for a week and think long haul is fine providing you pick the right airline. Im still researching destinations but I am from Yorkshire so have got the original Maldives holiday cheaper by £700 from the first quote.

The OP has got a week, which = 7 nights.

At least 2 nights (or 3 days) will be spent travelling,

That leaves 5 nights to enjoy a longhaul holiday in a very hot and humid country before the return flight. That doesn't leave much time to venture too far from Bangkok, and long and tiring day tours to places like Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi are exhausting especially at the hottest time of the year.

December and January are both peak holiday times in Bangkok (and the whole of SE Asia). So everywhere will be extremely busy, and particularly so in Bangkok where the Skytrain, Underground, and public ferries will all the chokker-block. The roads are always manic.

Not much of a holiday in my book.

Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere longhaul in January if I only had a week. Time to go home just as you're beginning to enjoy the break.
